New Bell Field Tennis Courts at Carleton

This fall Carleton College will be debuting a new tennis facility. The Bell Field Tennis Courts have been completely torn down and rebuilt. Not only are these new tennis courts a great addition to the Carleton College campus, they are a great addition to the Northfield community as well.

The Bell Field Tennis Courts are a unique part of Carleton's athletic facilities. What was once six courts has now been expanded into eight new courts, and the court surfacing and nets have been redone with state-of-the-art equipment. Not only will these courts be used by Carleton varsity athletics, they are also open to the Northfield community at no charge.

As the summer quickly comes to a close, head over to Carleton and try out the new tennis facility. These courts are a perfect spot for some summer fun and recreation.

On Sunday, June 6, Northfield Skating School skaters Emmalyn Fried, Milly Reese, and Elizabeth Penny delivered medal winning performances at the annual June Bug Jump and Spin competition held at the Pleasant Arena in St. Paul. Emmalyn moved up two levels to compete in Freeskate 2 and earned a gold medal for her performance. June Bug was Basic 6 competitor Milly Reese’s first competition, and she also earned gold. Elizabeth Penny advanced a skill level and continued her streak of winning a gold medal at every competition she has entered since she began competing in 2009. Elizabeth won gold in her compulsory program and bronze in her free skate. All skaters practice year-round and are coached by Northfield Skating School Owner/Director, Carey Tinkelenberg. Horse Camp at Winterhaven Stables

Horse Camp

The Winterhaven Stables summer horse camp is nearly full for the summer, but I'm still filling a few spaces in the week of July 19th through July 23rd. The horse camp is open for all children of all abilities ages 8 to 18. We stress classical principles of riding in the English disciplines of dressage, jumping, drill teams, and games. The horse camp is a full immersion day camp running Monday to Friday from 9 to 4 each day. Each camper will be responsible for their own horse for the whole week including grooming, tacking, bathing, and basic care. The week will culminate in a fun show on Friday afternoon to exhibit skills learned during the week. The camp is located on a working farm seven miles north of Northfield.  If interested contact Vickie Tyler at, or at 507-581-4052.

The book won the 2009 Seymour Medal, which honors the best book of baseball history published during the preceding calendar year. “For a Minnesota baseball fan,” writes Nick Coleman in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, “[Chief Bender’s Burden] is must reading."

Donations Now Accepted for "Youth Sports Equipment Exchange" at Northfield Middle School

Do you have extra, unneeded athletic shoes?

The Youth Sports Equipment Exchange is a group of middle school students who are aware that the cost of "special" athletic shoes can become an obstacle that prevents some children from participating in sports.  We all know how quickly youth outgrow their shoes and clothing.  Often times shoes can only be worn for one season.
