Wall Street Journal checks out Zoom! Yah! Yah!

Zoom! Yah! Yah! 2011

This year's annual Zoom! Yah! Yah! indoor marathon at St. Olaf attracted the attention of Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal writer Kevin Helliker. "A new badge of hardship is gaining popularity among marathoners," he writes in "Another Round? Indoor Marathons Keep Athletes Running in Circles."

"It's no longer so exceptional to have completed extra-long marathons, extra-hard ones or extra-large numbers of the 26.2-mile race. So the latest thing is to run a marathon that's extra dull."

Helliker notes perspectives from participants and observers, including the unique value of a marathon that begins with the letter "Z."

Announcing Skating School/Community Services Partnership and Session 3 Registration

We have an exciting announcement! Effective now with Session 3 registration, the Northfield Skating School will be partnering with the Northfield Public Schools Community Services Division. NSS will continue to offer the same high quality skating programs, U.S. Figure Skating curriculum, professional staff, and parent meetings. However, registration will now be handled directly through Community Services instead of through NSS staff.

Under the Community Services umbrella, we will be able to offer classes at a slightly lower cost and to promote our programs more widely throughout the community. Skaters will also be able to register online with a credit card – no more sending checks to the NSS post office box! Be on the lookout for the Community Services brochure in your mail box.

Northfield's "Green Bay Packer Fans" Adopt County Road 23

Green Bay Packer Fans

Tonight is the NFL season opener, and a Vikings fan driving into Northfield on County Road 23 cannot help but notice who has "adopted" the highway.

Green Bay Packer Fans

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, "community groups, churches, individuals or businesses" are eligible to adopt a highway, and must agree to pick up litter on both sides for at least two years. There are no rules prohibiting Packer fans from greening our highways.

Who, I wonder, are Northfield's "Green Bay Packer Fans" going to root for tonight?

The Vikings play the 2010 Superbowl champion New Orleans Saints at the Superdome tonight at 7:30 PM CST. The game will be broadcast on NBC.

Go Vikings!

Swim Fast!

Bull Sharks

The Northfield Swim Club Bull Sharks would like to welcome you to our pool! The Fall season is about to begin and we’d enjoy seeing some new faces mixed in with our 70+ current athletes. If you are able to swim from one side of the pool to the other (25 yards) without stopping, you are qualified to join our team!

We will have an informational meeting on September 13 from 6-7 at the pool at the middle school. Come check us out. If you sign up, we’ll have a team shirt and a team swim cap for you.

A clinic for beginner swimmers will be offered starting September 20 at the middle school. It will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for three weeks from 7-8 pm. This will give you a taste of what it is like to be on a swim team. After the clinic, you will see how great our team is and join us for the remainder of the season!

College Fall Sports Preview

The fall sports season is fast approaching . Both Northfield colleges are gearing up for another year of fierce competition. The fall sports that have commenced thus far are football, and men’s and women’s soccer.

This year at St. Olaf, football is off to an exciting start with forty-three new first-year athletes, in addition to last years returning players. Head Coach Jerry Olszewski is implementing a new team motto: “Either grab an oar or grab a life jacket, help paddle or head for shore”. This year is about teamwork and working as one. The first Ole football game will be September 4th vs. Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Carleton football is also off to a strong start beginning their season with offensive tackle, Brad Eckelmann being named Pre-Season All-American for the second straight year. Head Coach Kurt Ramler will lead the Knights into their first battle on September 4th vs. Crown College in Saint Bonifacius, Minnesota. Their first home game will be on September 18th vs. Luther.
