Skateboard Park Design Workshop

Charette03Last night (Wednesday, September 25), the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) held a design workshop for the skateboard park at the City Council chambers in City Hall. The workshop was led by Hays Hitzing, the director of skatepark development from Spohn Ranch Skateparks. Hays showed some concept designs for the skatepark, including those developed by Charley Markson in consultation with the Skateboard Coalition, and fielded questions from the audience. Neighbors in attendance expressed concerns about noise and landscaping and the impact on property values; skateboarders offered a variety of opinions about the possible design features of the park. BMXers were also in attendence to advocate for use of the park by BMX riders. After the general meeting, the skateboarders met with Hays to brainstorm design ideas, which Hays will incorporate into designs to be presented to the PRAB. The next meeting of the PRAB is on Thursday, October 17.

World's Largest Swim Lesson

WLSL Group

What a magnificent turn out for the first annual World's Largest Swimming Lesson put on by Community Services and held at Northfield's Old Memorial Pool.  Fifty-six participants engaged in a half hour swim lesson in an attempt to help break the world record for the most people taking a swim lesson at once.  Northfield was one of more than seven hundred sites across five continents registered for the event.  WLSL is an event to help raise awareness that swimming lessons save lives.  I saw lots of shivers this morning, but everyone was engaged and was learning something.  Participants learned about water safety and took part in blowing bubbles, kicking, floating, submerging their bodies under water to look for dive toys, and worked on swimming strokes.  Parents and children proved hardy on this brisk morning and turned out for a most important swimming lesson!  Stay tuned to find out if the world record was broken!

The Northfield Skateboard Coalition is Making a Difference

The Northfield Skateboard Coalition has received the Healthy Community Initiative’s “Making a Difference” Award for March/April 2013. The award celebrates those groups and individuals in the community who have a positive influence on Northfield youth.

Rob Hardy, an adult adviser to the group, and filmmaker Cecilia Cornejo nominated the coalition members for the award, citing the dedication and resolve the youth demonstrated throughout the lengthy civic process of working to bring a permanent skate park to Northfield.

“There have been times when the adults have gotten frustrated, angry, or rude, and the kids have never done that. They’ve been models of good behavior and civility,” Hardy said.
