2010 Primaries

For the first time, the primary election this year will be held on August 10. This is an important event, as it is the way we nominate the candidates for the November election.  For example, in Northfield, there are candidates challenging the incumbents for both the At-Large seat now held by Rhonda Pownell, Norman Butler and Steve Engler; and for Ward 4, where Jon Denison is the incumbent, Patrick Ganey and Dale Gehring.  The several high profile state races have primaries as well. Two DFL candidates want to unseat incumbent Congressman John Kline: Shelley Madore and Dan Powers. Both DFL candidates for congress have web sites; Shelley Madore (http://madoreforcongress.com/) and Dan Powers: (http://www.danpowers.org/)

There are five independence Party candidates, four Republican candidates and four DFL candidates for the open seat for governor. Two DFL candidates will be on the ballot for Secretary of State and two Republicans and two DFL candidates for Attorney General.  The names of all these candidates and their web addresses are available at the Secretary of State's website: http://www.sos.state.mn.us/index.aspx?page=4, click on Search 2010 Candidate Filings.

While it is encouraging to see such high interest in serving, the primary election requires effort on all our parts to prepare to vote on August 10. Fortunately, voters will have a chance to size up the contestants for city council at the League of Women Voters forum on Thursday, July 29, at 7:00 p.m. in the Northfield City Council Chambers. For the federal and state contexts, voters must rely on candidate print publicity and web sites.

Only one of the local candidates has a campaign web site: Rhonda Pownell (http://rhondapownell.blogspot.com/).
