N.org's Weekly Book Report for May 2, 2007

Wbr-Logo1

We're running a little late this week here at N.org. For you see, we were on a business trip to Green Bay. Yes, that Green Bay. They're more than a little nuts over there - for instance, if you click here you can see the overhead lighting in a restaurant that we were eating in. While I know someone with a Vikings tattoo, I'm pretty sure that the number of people with Packer tats outnumber the number of Viking tattoos - and that's just if you count the children.

Also, I saw the bay and it totally wasn't green. I feel so cheated.

On with the lists!...

The Northfield Historical Society joins the WBR crew this week...

River City Books goes deep this week with books for graduates...

Studies have shown that the gift most graduates want more than any other is, well, cash. Lots of cold cash, preferably bills with multiple zeros. But if this spring you’re looking for a more affordable — and personal — gift for the graduate in your life, books often fit the bill. After all, what’s better than the gift of knowledge? Books are also terrific gifts because you can stop by River City Books on the way to the party, pick out a great title, have it wrapped — gratis! — and no one will ever know you had no clue what you were buying forty-five minutes before the first party sub was devoured.

With a toss of our caps in honor of the Class of 2007, some suggestions:

1. Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss

Comment: Oh, we’re never too old to enjoy this classic.

2. What Should I Do With My Life? The True Story of People Who Answered the Ultimate Question by Po Bronson

Comment: Bronson writes of remarkable individuals — from young to old, from those just starting out to those in a second career — who have overcome fear and confusion to find a larger truth about their lives. In other words, graduates, the big question that wasn’t on your final exam.

3. Life’s Journeys According to Mister Rogers: Things to Remember Along the Way by Fred Rogers

Comment: Is there anyone better suited to dispense wisdom — outside of your mother, I mean — than Mister Rogers? No chance.

4. Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation by Parker Palmer

Comment: This Carleton College grad offers wisdom for anyone who seeks their true calling.

5. What Color Is Your Parachute?: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers by Richard Nelson Bolles

Comment: Unfortunately, we can’t live off our parents forever. This is a great guide for those suddenly in the market for work.

6. Bartlett’s Words to Live by: Advice and Inspiration for Everyday Life by John Bartlett

Comment: As The Raven always says, “I may not be bright, but people don’t know I’m not bright when I repeat things bright people have said.”

And going for it on fourth down is the Northfield Public Library. It's a big list, so I'll just post the biographies as a teaser for the full file...
