And now River City Books...

What Are Your Neighbors Reading?

One of the most popular displays at River City Books is something we call “What Northfield is Reading” — a wall devoted to the fifty top-selling books, based exclusively on our sales report. There are plenty of national bestseller lists out there, but customers are often curious about what other local readers are enjoying. With that in mind, here are the top ten sellers at RCB so far in 2007:

1. Chemistry of Joy by Henry Emmons

Comment: If you see a lot of contented faces while walking down Division Street, here’s why! It’s always great to see a local author sell well.

2. Torch by Cheryl Strayed

Comment: This courageous novel lit up the bestseller list during Strayed’s recent visit for Northfield Reads!

3. Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood by Ann Brashares

Comment: Young adult readers are savoring the final summer of the Traveling Pants.

4. The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards

Comment: We haven’t talked to a customer yet who has read this stunning family drama and didn’t quickly become engrossed.

5. The Secret by Rhoda Byrne

Comment: This book is no longer hush-hush. A runaway national bestseller.

6. The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls

Comment: A memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar, but loyal, family.

7. Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama

Comment: This is no polished political advertisement. Rather, it’s a flat-out well-written memoir that shows an intelligent mind wrestling with deeply personal experiences.

8. Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan

Comment: Sink your teeth into this exploration of why we consume what we eat in the 21st century.

9. The Places in Between by Rory Stewart

Comment: A timely memoir about a man who survived a walk across Afghanistan.

10. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

Comment: Says the Boston Globe: “Powerfully alive, unfolding like a waking dream, haunting, magical, and absolutely impossible to forget.”
