Meet the candidates, learn the issues at election forums

The election season is heating up, and several groups are out to make sure you meet the candidates, know the issues and that you have every opportunity to get the information you need to cast your vote wisely on Nov. 7.

School referendum

One of the most important races doesn't have any candidates at all. The Northfield Public Schools will hold a referendum on a request for an excess levy. They levy, which will run for seven years, will raise $1,180 per student, or $5.2 million, replacing the current levy of $685 per student. The levy has an inflationary clause, which could increase the amount over the seven years.

A second proposal up for a vote would raise a flat $750,000 a year for capital improvements.

Monday, Sept. 25, 7:30 p.m., Northfield Public Library. The League of Women Voters will devote its 4th Monday program to a presentation on the levy proposal.
Tuesday, Sept. 26, 7 p.m., Northfield High School. School District officials will offer a presentation on the levy proposal.
Monday, Oct. 2. 7 p.m., Northfield High School. Repeat of Sept. 26 program.

You can read the details of the levy proposal on the Northfield Public Schools website. If you have questions, put them in the comments at the end of this story and we'll get the answers for you.
