Few Americans know the name Alice Rothchild. But there’s a good chance the book, “Our Bodies, Our Selves,” is a familiar one. Rothchild, a retired obstetrician-gynecologist who contributed to that groundbreaking 1971 book, will speak in Northfield on April 25. Rothchild is also director and co-producer of the award-winning 2013 documentary, “Voices Across the Divide.”

Rothchild’s progressive politics, shaped by opposition to the Vietnam War during her college days, led her to focus on the crisis in Israel-Palestine starting in the late 1990s. She will present her talk, “A Jewish American Journey: Heartbreak and Hope in Israel/Palestine,” at 7 p.m., April 25, 2019, at the First United Church of Christ, 300 Union St., in Northfield. A question-and-answer session will follow. Admission is free and open to the public.

Rothchild was born into an observant Jewish family in Boston in 1948, the year the modern State of Israel was established. Her father, Seymour, was a chemist. Her mother, Sylvia, taught and wrote about Jewish issues, including a book, “Voices from the Holocaust,” which chronicled the oral histories of survivors of the Nazi Holocaust.

“Immersed in these stories, I began to understand that buried in the wounds of my own people’s near annihilation, another people’s story was lost,” Rothchild wrote. “I feel it is my personal responsibility as my mother’s daughter and as a Jewish American who has grappled with the multiple narratives in this region, to listen and document the tragedy that was created by my own people’s tragedy.”

Rothchild is making several presentations in the area. For other events, see the calendar page at voicesacrossthedivide.com/documentary/film-showings/.

The presentation is organized by NJP, a diverse group of community members who organize local events to educate and advocate for justice and peace in Palestine/Israel. Members of the committee are available to speak about their experiences in Palestine/Israel.
