Northfield Arts Guild Main Gallery: Center for the Arts

The Northfield Arts Guild presents “eXperiential”: an exhibition of work by artists Roxanne Richards and Joy Davis Ripley in The Guild’s Main Gallery through July 15, 2017.  Terra LaChance will exhibit her exploration of tintype photography “Tintypes and Authenticity” in The Guild’s Up Gallery during this same period.  The Main Gallery is located in The Guild’s Center for the Arts, 304 Division Street South, Northfield.

Richards says, “As a colorist, I find dry pastel the perfect medium to explore the depths of color since dry pastels are almost pure pigment. Isopropyl alcohol mixed with dry pastels allows me to both draw and paint with the pastels. This handling of the medium produces a very atmospheric and layered effect, which conveys the ambiguity of my new normal.”

Davis Ripley comments on her own work: “I’m drawn to strong lines, bursts of color, and details that allow for fresh perspectives. As I continued to experience an increased sense of well-being from my photography, I began wondering if mindfully integrating art into our daily lives could lead to a reprieve from our harried, hurried lives.”

Terra LaChance, recipient of an Emerging Artist Grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) will exhibit “Tintypes and Authenticity”, an exploration of tintype photography in the Guild’s Up Gallery during this same period. In using a unique 19th Century method of portraiture, Terra LaChance has captured unique images of area Northfield youth. The soul revealing quality of the tintype adds to these portraits:  unveiling the “authentic self." LaChance says, “What has drawn me to tintypes is its ability to reveal characteristics of a person's face that you do not get from digital or film photography. I have heard a number of parents that see their child in a tintype for the first time state, ‘That doesn't even look like him/her!"’”

The Northfield Arts Guild Office, Shop, Main and Up Galleries are located at 304 Division Street South, Northfield. Regular business hours are Mondays through Fridays from 12:00pm to 6:00pm and Saturdays from 11:00am to 3:00 pm.   The pastel drawings and photographs-turned-clothing by artists, Roxanne Richards and Joy Davis Ripley will be featured in the Northfield Arts Guild's Main Gallery through July 15, 2017.

The “eXperiential” exhibition is sponsored by Eco Gardens.   The Northfield Arts Guild 2016-17 Gallery Season is generously sponsored by First National Bank.
