The League of Women Voters of Northfield & Cannon Falls is pleased to announce their Fall Kick-off on Saturday, October 3rd.  The event will take place at the First United Church of Christ (300 Union St; Northfield) - 9:00 am gathering and 9:30 am program.   The public is invited to hear Secretary of State Steve Simon and Second Chance Coalition Founder Sarah Walker address the status of voting rights for felons in Minnesota and efforts underway for change. Following the speakers' remarks, audience members will be invited to participate in a Q and A.

Currently, convicted felons who are on probation, supervised release, or incarcerated are denied viting rights in Minnesota, although a number of other states permit voting once a felon has been released into the community.  The Second Chance Coalition notes that the majority of individuals currently disenfranchised have never spent time in prison, and 87% of the state's 70,000 disenfranchised live in the community, hold jobs, and pay taxes.

The League of Women Voters is looking forward to the opportunity to bring this topic to the attention of Northfielders. Come to hear the speakers share their perspectives and bring your questions, concerns or clarifications to the Q and A that follows their remarks.
