This Week at City Hall

It's going to be a busy week at City Hall, with lots of important issues under discussion. Here's a preview...

Monday, 7 p.m. City Council: The council meets in a work session to tackle the new library space needs assessment. A report released in April indicates it could cost up to $9.2 million to replace or renovate the downtown library, so this should be interesting. The council also will discuss the proposed pay equity plan for city employees.

Tuesday, 7:30 a.m. Economic Development Authority: The EDA will get a look at the revised version of the city's proposed Economic Development Plan. The consultants recently provided a draft version, which drew lots of suggestions for changes and improvements.

Tuesday, 7 p.m. Park and Recreation Advisory Board: RENew Northfield and some concerned citizens (including yours truly) will appear to ask the city to consider naming an official volunteer commission to coordinate non-motorized traffic issues—basically biking and walking. There are lots of efforts going on to make the city more friendly to bicyclists and pedestrian, but there are grants and programs that can boost the efforts if the city gets involved. Ideas include making maps of safe walking and bike routes for residents and visitors, working with the schools to promote walking and biking and promoting walking and biking efforts.

Tuesday, 7 p.m. Planning Commission: The agenda includes Plat approval for the Greene Side Addition, a three-lot subdivision at 1109 Woodley Street E.

Thursday, 3 p.m. Hospital Board: The board will hold a brief meeting and then go into a retreat that runs through Friday at the Oak Ridge Conference Center in Chaska. The board has a lot to discuss, given the recent announcement of its alliance with Mayo Health System.

If you want to learn more about any of these issues, you can check out the City Hall website at Most agendas and minutes of meetings are available threre. If you can't make a meeting, check with your local cable provider's listings to see which meetings are broadcast and when.
