Latin Inspirations Concert

The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra (CVRO) presents two performances of “Latin Inspirations,” a concert featuring music and performances by regional Hispanic artists, on Friday, May 18 at 7pm at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield, and Saturday, May 19 at 4pm at the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault.

The concert will feature Manny Laureano, the Minnesota Orchestra’s principle trumpeter, as a guest soloist and premier a commissioned concerto by the acclaimed composer Reinaldo Moya, who currently serves as Assistant Professor of Composition at Augsburg University. ”Latin Inspirations” will also feature the Northfield Arts Guild’s Baile Folklórico Mexicano dancers and local vocalist Guillermo Calderón. The concert will be performed under the direction of CVRO founder and conductor, Dr. Paul Niemisto.

The concert was inspired by Niemisto’s childhood memory of hearing a live concert by the famous Mexican trumpet player Rafael Mendéz, and witnessing the musician’s impact on America’s appetite for Hispanic music. Wanting to bring Mendéz’s playing style to CVRO audiences, “I approached Manny Laureano about being our guest soloist to play the old favorites,” Niemisto said. “I then approached composer Reinaldo Moya, who lives in Northfield, about writing a work for trumpet and orchestra.  This has turned out to be a big triumph. We have a new trumpet concerto!”

Advanced sale tickets are $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for students and seniors.  Tickets may be purchased at the Northfield Arts Guild, 304 Division Street South, by calling the Guild at 507-645-8877 or online at A suggested, “pay what you want” admission is also available at the door, and no one will be turned away because of an inability to pay.

Since 1979, CVRO has drawn players from a wide area, including Northfield, Cannon Falls, New Prague, Red Wing and Faribault. The performers are dedicated amateurs of all ages whose love for orchestral music encourages them to perform to high levels of artistic excellence.
