On Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Grand Event Center, the public is invited to celebrate the Northfield Public Library with an evening of trivia, music and dancing. The Friends and Foundation of the Northfield Public Library (FFNPL) will host a Trivia Bee led by quiz mistress Jessica Peterson White, along with live music and dancing to the sounds of one of the area's favorite bands, The Zillionaires. Proceeds from this not-to-be-missed event will support a wide range of initiatives and programs at the Northfield Public Library. Community members are encouraged to register teams of up to four people (along with a tax-deductible entry fee of $100 or more) for trivia competition; individual participants and party-goers of all ages are also welcome to attend. There will be a suggested donation at the door.

"We decided to 'mix things up a bit' this year," notes Bill North, president of the FFNPL, an all-volunteer group of local community members who work in support of the Northfield Public Library. "Rather than a spelling bee, we thought 'Let's have a trivia bee!' Trivia is really fun -- and everybody knows a lot about 'something.' And we're really pleased to have our event hosted by none other than Northfield's much-admired quiz mistress, Jessica Peterson White."

Trivia guru Peterson White, who hosts the popular weekly quiz night at The Contented Cow, explains the format of the event: "Teams of up to four will compete by answering questions on a wide range of topics, both trivia and otherwise, from Northfield history to national news, from gardening to football, from Harry Potter to Shakespeare." Teams that survive the qualifying round will move on to compete in semi-finals and then finals, with the top three teams vying for first place in an exciting championship round on the stage of The Grand Theater. "Winning teams," promises Peterson White, "will receive a hearty handshake and the warm glow of victory -- as well as some fabulous prizes."

"Of course, the biggest winner," adds North, "will be the community of Northfield. We are so fortunate to have a top-notch public library that serves us all in so many different ways throughout our lives."

In addition to the team trivia competition, the evening will also feature audience participation events with prizes, hors d'ouevres and cash bar, and live music and dancing to The Zillionaires. "This is a fundraiser in support of the Library," says North, "but it's also a party and a time to come together with friends to celebrate this wonderful community resource."

Teams of up to four should register for competition with a $100 (or more) tax-deductible entry fee by Wednesday, Nov. 28. Entry forms for trivia competition can be found at the Northfield Public Library and also online at "Teams can be sponsored by businesses or other community organizations -- or you can just pull together a group of friends and neighbors," says Jessica Peterson White. "We will also offer some fun opportunities for individual 'trivia masters' and party attendees as well."

Additional donations can also be made in support of the Northfield Public Library. Please send them to FFNPL (Friends and Foundation of the NPL), 210 Washington Street, Northfield, MN, 55057. These are tax-deductible.
