May 10 2014 7:00 pm
UCC Church, Northfield

With the theme “Vive la France!!” Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra will present its final concerts of the 2013-14 season on Saturday and Sunday, May 10 and 11, 2014. The concerts will feature Northfield mezzo soprano soloist Deesa Staats in arias by Berlioz, Massenet, and Offenbach. Also featured will be the Northfield Harp Ensemble playing in Debussy’s “Petite Suite” and the Cesár Franck D Minor Symphony.

The Saturday concert will be performed at First United Church of Christ, 300 Union St., Northfield, at 7:00 PM and the Sunday concert at 7:00 PM in Cannon Falls at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, 7459 Hwy 19 Boulevard. Advance tickets are available from the Northfield Arts Guild (; 507-645-8877) and at the door before each concert.

French composers have provided some of the most melodic and exciting orchestral and operatic music and are commonly heard in today’s concert halls. The CVRO has presented several concerts over the years focusing on national themes, but has never featured French music. When asked about these concerts, conductor Paul Niemisto said, “We looked at a treasure trove of beautiful mezzo soprano arias which suit Deesa’s voice perfectly, and so we built the concert around them.”

The Northfield area has an unusually large number of harpists and French orchestra music features this beautiful instrument prominently. The concert will feature three harps in the Debussy and Franck pieces and will end with Edith Piaf’s world famous torch song “Je ne regret rien.”

The CVRO spring concert is underwritten by Ferndale Market and season sponsor Community Resource Bank of Northfield.   CVRO functions under the auspices of the Northfield Arts Guild, while other funding comes through the McKnight Foundation, Southeast Minnesota Arts Council, and Legacy funding through the MN legislature.

The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra draws players from a wide area including Northfield, New Prague, Faribault, Kenyon, Owatonna, and Red Wing and has been under the direction of Dr. Paul Niemisto since 1979.  The players are serious amateurs who play for the love of orchestra music.  The CVRO will observe its 35th year during the 2-14-15 season.
