The Northfield Humanist Roundtable is a monthly discussion group which addresses the history, philosophy, and practical application of secular humanism. The discussion format uses a brief introduction followed by questions which each participant may respond to in turn.

Jean-Paul Sartre, a professor of philosophy at La Havre and several other French lycées, was one of the most important figures in atheist existentialism. In his 1946 essay "Existentialism is a Humanism," Sartre defines atheist existentialism in an unusually clear and straightforward way, and explains how it is related to humanism. For our September meeting, we'll look at several passages from "Existentialism is a Humanism" and discuss to what extent we agree or disagree with Sartre.

Please come join us. There is no charge, and everyone sympathetic to humanist principles is welcome.

For more information, visit our website at www.northfieldhumanistroundtable.org.

Northfield is the place where the late Sen. Paul Wellstone launched his political career, which emphasized matters of peace and justice. Northfield is the community that nurtured peace activist Lauren Wieber, a recent NHS graduate, who is doing humanitarian work in the Dominican Republic with the proceeds of a peace essay contest prize.

It is also the place from where 70-year-old justice activist Larry Johnson will connect these threads and begin a 70-mile walk to bring attention to a host of social issues. He will kick off his “Beating Weapons into Windmills” walk, at an event at 7 p.m., Oct. 22, at the Cannon Valley Friends Meeting House, 512 Washington St., Northfield.

Larry is a veteran, author and long-time activist who is undertaking the walk and events along the way to bring attention to environmental degradation, the risk posed by nuclear plants and weapons and the undue influence of corporate power over ordinary Americans.

The Northfield Humanist Roundtable is a monthly discussion group which addresses the history, philosophy, and practical application of secular humanism. The discussion format uses a brief introduction followed by questions which each participant may respond to in turn.

Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) is considered one of the most original and influential philosophers of the Western world. In his most important work, Ethics, he argues that what he calls God has no human form or motivations, but is synonymous with the entire physical universe and the entire universe of thoughts and ideas. These two universes, Spinoza says, are not separate but are mirror images of each other.

Along with the Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra, The Laura MacKenzie Trio (Laura MacKenzie – wooden flutes, whistles, pipes and voice; Dáithí Sproule – guitar and voice; and Mary Vanorny – fiddle) will present a program of traditional music originally arranged for Dáithí’s group Altan, in celebration of the ensemble’s 25 years of performing music together.  These well-loved tunes and songs have been performed with the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra and the Royal Scottish Opera Orchestra, and range from delightful dance tunes to beautiful ballads, sung in both Irish and English.
