Start: Nov 2 2013 7:00 pm

The ancient Hebrew prophets cast a vision of a nonviolent society when they urged their hearers to beat their swords into plowshares.

Israeli-American author Miko Peled will cast a vision for a peaceful Middle East when he speaks at St. Olaf next month about his and his father’s metaphorical “beatings” from militant Zionists to advocates for Palestinian rights.

Peled’s free lecture, “Beyond Zionism—A New Paradigm for Israel-Palestine,” is 7 p.m., Nov. 2, 2013, at Tomson Hall 280 on the campus of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. Peled is the author of “The General’s Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine” (Just World Books, 2012). He will take questions and sign books—available at the event—after his presentation. The event is co-sponsored by Northfielders for Justice in Palestine/Israel, Oles for Justice in Palestine, the Department of Political Science, the Department of Sociology/Anthropology and the Middle East Studies Program of St. Olaf.

Join young people and adults from the second congressional district for a youth summit designed to help address the achievement and opportunity gaps in Minnesota. Food will be served, but please register early, as space is limited.

This is the first in a series of summits to be held around the state that will highlight responses to a survey administered by the Minnesota Youth Council last year, in which young people identified their top issues as bullying; drug and alcohol abuse; and gangs, crime, and safety. Participants will examine these issues’ relevance to the dropout rate and achievement gap.

Youth, concerned adults and community leaders are encouraged to participate.

Native American historian Zonnie Gorman will present the Carleton College convocation address on Friday, November 8 from 10:50 to 11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. In her presentation, Gorman will discuss the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II; Gorman is the daughter of Carl Gorman, one of the first twenty-nine Code Talkers. This event is free and open to the public. Carleton’s convocations are also streamed online and can be viewed at go.carleton.edu/convo.

The Code Talkers were a small band of young Navajo men who transmitted secret communications on the battlefields of World World II. Considered the most ingenious and successful code in military history, their unbreakable code played a pivotal role in saving countless lives and hastening the war’s end. More about the Navajo Code Talkers can be found at www.navajocodetalkers.org.

Tuesday, November 12th is a state-wide day of action to call upon Excel Energy to invest in clean energy. Is race merely a matter of phenotype, or does it come from the inflection of a person's speech, the clothes in her closet, how she chooses to spend her time and with whom she chooses to spend it?   What does it mean to be "really" black, and who gets to make that judgment?

Dr. Devon Carbado will be addressing these questions in his public lecture based on the book he co-wrote with Mitu Gulati, “Acting White?  Rethinking Race in ‘Post-Racial’ America”.
