YMCA Day Camp - Wilderness Experience for Kids entering K-5th Grade

2009 Northfield YMCA Day Camp - NEW Weekly Theme Information Added below!

Day Camp offered five full weeks this Summer:
  • Nature hikes, animal & bug search, explore the wonderful outdoors
  • Weekly trips (swimming, visit a farm, organic garden and so much more!)
  • Games to stretch the body and exercise the heart and spark imaginations
  • Team building activities, playing with new and old friends, arts and crafts
  • Hands on learning about the wind, earth, water, weather and our environment
  • Imagination and adventure opportunities abound in the great outdoors
  • Unique experience each week
This summer we split Day Camp into two different age groups. Each week has new curriculum and adventurous plans - so join us for one week or all weeks!
Camp activities include learning about birds, trees, the earth, the river, the wind, rain and clouds, plants, bugs, camping, setting up a tent, recycling, parachute games, ball games, outdoor cooking (age appropriate), hiking, treasure hunts, animals and so much more!
The Cannon River Wilderness Area consists of approximately 850 acres of wooded river valley. The Wilderness Area is located four miles north of Faribault and extends along the Cannon River to a point about five miles south of Northfield.
Cannon River Wilderness Park features:
  • Five miles of Cross Country skiing and hiking trails
  • Picnic area complete with picnic shelter and comfort station
  • Well and hand pump
  • Laminated wood beam footbridge built across the Cannon River
  • Four primitive campsites
  • Canoe trail to the Cannon River
  • Nature trail has been established and several thousand seedling trees have been planted in the area.
K-2nd Grade:
  • June 15 – 19 (Nuts For Nature! - Are you nuts for nature? Discover all about the weather, trees, birds, animals, preserving our environment and more!)
  • July 13 – 17 (Into the Wild! - Learn about animals and their unique habitats around the world such as tropics, prairie, arctic and dessert. Discover what you need to survive outdoors including how to build a tent and cook outdoors. Focus is on outdoor education and team activities).
  • Aug 10 – 14 (Our Planet Extreme! - Learn about extreme animals that slither, crawl and fly.  Daily activities are oriented around natures’ coolest, weirdest and strongest including crafts and games. Prepare to be amazed).
3rd-5th Grade:
  • June 29 – July 3 (Captain Planet! - Discover what is being done to conserve our natural resources and to save endangered species. Learn how you can help through reducing and reusing every day materials. Find an appreciation for nature through experiences such as hiking, creating with nature, scavenger hunts and more. Also include group games to foster team building skills and sportsmanship).
  • July 27 – 31 (Y-Lympics! - Participate in Y-Lympic outdoor adventures such as relays, scavenger hunts and group games. Foucs is on discovering the outdoors, physical fitness and team building activities. incorporates hands on learning about the surrounding environment specifically wild plants, critters and forest ecosystems).
This is a full week program at the Rice County, Cannon River Wilderness Park (South on Hwy 3). Hours are 9:30 am and 3:30 pm with before and after care available at the Northfield National Guard Armory at no additional fee.
Transportation to and from the Cannon River Wilderness Park is provided and included in the price of the program. Kids must be at the National Guard Armory by 9:00 each morning and will return by 4:00 each afternoon.

Parents, prepare yourself! They’ll come home talking 90 mph filled with details of the adventures of each day.
Before and After care is available (if needed) at the Northfield National Guard Armory (6:30 -8:45 am and 3:30-6:00 pm). No additional charge for before/after care.

Cost:  Non-members: $171 per week
Cost:  Members: $160 per week
Deposit:  $40 per week deposit at time of sign-up to guarantee spot
Before/After Care:   6:30-8:45 am and 3:30-6:00 pm at the Armory at no extra cost
Location:  Cannon River Wilderness Park
Transportation leaves daily by 9:00 and returns by 4:00 (and is included in the price of Camp)
