News Roundup: July 13th Flooding

Between 4 and 6 inches of rain fell between 3 and 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, causing flash floods in the Northfield and Dundas areas. Flooded homes were evacuated in Dundas, sandbags were deployed along the river in Northfield, and a flooded metal culvert tore through Armstrong Road near the Northfield compost site. Among those seriously affected by the flooding was SEEDS Farm CSA, which lost an acre of crops. Some areas of the farm stood under as much as five feet of water. Check the farm's Facebook page for volunteer clean-up opportunities in the coming days.

Here's a USGS graph of Cannon River levels (at the recording station at Welch, MN) since July 2013. Notice how the pre-2010 flood crest of about 8 feet have been succeeded by 10- to 14-foot crests since 2010.
