Jean Boardman

Jean Andersen Boardman, age 64 of Northfield, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2008 at her home surrounded by her family.  She is survived by sons Steven (Karen) Boardman of Northfield, David (Michelle) Boardman of Minneapolis; brothers Bruce (Janna) Andersen of Tucson, AZ, Karl (Satri Pencak) Andersen of Bodega, CA; and by grandchildren Grant, Samuel, and Maxwell (Steve and Karen) and Abraham (David and Michelle). She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Shelby.

Jean was born February 18, 1944 in Rochester, NY, daughter of Victor and Katherine (Shuman) Andersen. At a young age her family moved to Akron, OH where she was raised and graduated from high school. She then attended the University of Michigan for 2 years and then transferred to Miami of Ohio where she obtained her B.A.

On May 21, 1966 she was united in marriage to Shelby Jett Boardman in Akron and then both attended graduate school at the University of Michigan; Jean with a Masters of Social Work and Shelby with a Doctorate in Geology. In 1971 they moved to Northfield when Shelby accepted a teaching position in the Geology Department at Carleton College. For the first years in Northfield Jean was at home with their two boys and in 1977 began working at the Northfield Community Action Center and then from 1988-2002 was employed as a social worker for the Northfield Public Schools. She was elected to the Northfield School Board in 2000, resigning in 2005 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Jean's connection with Northfield and with her friends and family was deep and impactful.  She was energized by enriching the lives of others.  Through her work at the Community Action Center and the Northfield Schools she was able to give back to the community at large.  All those who knew her benefited from her ability to listen and empathize.  For her friends and family she was a rock; providing a supportive word, a shoulder to cry on or sound advice without a thought.  Throughout her life, Jean's primary occupation was giving energy and love to those around her and thriving on the love and companionship of her friends and family.

Memorial Services will be held 11:00am Saturday, June 21st 2008 at the First United Church of Christ in Northfield with a reception to follow.  Memorial gifts to the United Church of Christ or the Susan B Komen Foundation. Arrangements by the Bierman Funeral Home of Northfield.
