Herman was born Feb. 3, 1928, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Herman Sr. and Kittie Vore. He grew up on a farm in Ames, Iowa, and graduated from high school in 1946. Herman was a veteran of World War II, serving from 1946 until 1948 where he was a member of the occupation forces in Japan. He later served in the Korean War from 1950 until 1951, followed by being a flight instructor at the Air National Guard from 1956 until 1967. He left the service with the rank of master sergeant. Herman experienced the Dust Bowl, the Depression era, wars, and through it all came out the "warrior spirit" that we all loved.

Through his work career, Herman worked at Sears Roebuck, Singer Sewing Machine Company and General Dynamics. He owned an appliance business, was world-wide sales manager for a pre-fabricated housing sales company, nuclear reactor quality control manager, and district underwriting manager for an insurance company. He graduated from electronics school in the Navy, and was close to getting his bachelor's degree later in life. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6872, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He married Dorothy Ann Dobbe and together had a daughter, Sonja. He later married Maxine Harvey and moved to Texas in 1967.

Herman enjoyed visiting his family until his physical health prevented any further trips. His love of stamps, coins, reading, and his dog, Lexie, was self-evident. Herman was an inspirational man who will be greatly missed.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy Ann; and his second wife, Maxine.
