Future of Cities Discussion - May 12, 7:00 p.m. at Archer House

On behalf of the League of Minnesota Cities, Northfield City Councilor Rhonda Pownell invites  citizens to attend a community-wide meeting to hear about the future cities face, and why it is important for the public to engage in dialogue about the future of city services and how they will be financed.

The gathering is part of the League of Minnesota Cities “Community Conversations” project, supported by the Bush Foundation, and being held in ten cities, selected because of their level of citizen involvement.  The primary goal is for the ideas, opinions and perspectives shared across Minnesota to become the foundation for better policy solutions for the people of Minnesota and their communities.

Four meetings are being held in Northfield. The first three are in collaboration with Carleton College, Growing Up Healthy, and Village on the Cannon. The fourth community-wide event,  “Community Values:  Bringing it All Together,” will be held on Thursday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Archer House Riverside Conference Room.  Because space is limited, interested persons should contact Rachel Walker, rwalker@lmc.org or (651) 281-1236.

According to Pownell, “These meetings will serve as the groundwork for future policy development and legislative action for all Minnesota cities. We'd like to gather a wide cross section of our community for this meeting and have 60 or more people in attendance.”

All of the costs, facilitation, and planning for the Community Conversations are being handled by the League, in conjunction with the University of Minnesota Extension Service and the Bush Foundation.

In addition to serving on the city council, Pownell is a member of the League of Minnesota Cities Board of Directors and the Insurance Trust.  The mission of LMC is to promote excellence in local government through effective advocacy, expert analysis and trusted guidance for all Minnesota cities.
