Celebrating Light (and Meatballs) for 40 Years

Lucia 2015

Northfield High School junior Rose Mibus will lead the procession Friday, Dec. 11, at the 40th annual Lucia Fest sponsored by the Northfield Swedish Club.

You don't have to be Swedish to join in the festivities, but a willingness to have fun is recommended. The event begins at 6 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 500 Third St. West in Northfield. The celebration marks the beginning of the Swedish Christmas season and includes a potluck supper, a Lucia processional and pageant, live fiddle music, the singing of Swedish carols, and folk dancing.

Dressed in white with a red sash at her waist and wearing a crown of candles on her head, Lucia will lead a procession of attendants and star boys, singing the traditional St. Lucia song. Afterward, Lucia and her attendants will serve cookies and coffee to everyone. The event concludes with songs and dancing around the Christmas tree.

The 2015 Lucia attendants are Grace Casson, Claire Casson, Erin Gunn, Synneva Bratland, Annika Fredrickson, Helene Schneider, Leah Olson, Sylvia Koenig, Merri Kmoch, Ava O'Neill, Sigrid Zillmer, Annika Nguyen, Laura Rezac, Annie Frank, Lenyn Pfau, Tegan Chadwick, Astrid Peterson White, and Elsa Nystrom. The star boys are Bjorn Olson and Max Casson.

Everyone is invited to attend this free, family friendly event. Bring your own tableware, two dishes to pass, and one dozen cookies.
