Audition for "The Miracle Worker"



The Northfield Arts Guild is hosting auditions for William Gibson’sThe Miracle Worker, a play based on Helen Keller’s autobiography, The Story of My Life.  Auditions for several children’s roles will be held on Sunday, January 29, 5:00 to 6:30 pm.  Auditions for eight adult and teen roles will be on Sunday, January 29, 6:30 to 8:00 pm and on Monday, January 30, 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Auditions will be held at the Northfield Arts Guild Center for the Arts, 304 Division Street South, Northfield. 

Adapted from the true story of their lives, this inspirational drama chronicles Helen Keller’s miraculous journey from her trapped and silent world to one of knowledge and freedom with the help of her beloved and gifted tutor Anne Sullivan.  The Miracle Worker is a testament to the power of the human spirit.

All roles are available and range in age from 7 – 65.  Roles include:  Helen Keller (a deaf, blind and mute child), Annie Sullivan (Helen’s vibrant teacher), Captain Arthur Keller (Helen’s stern by loving father), Kate Keller (Helen’s devoted mother), James Keller (Helen’s apathetic half-brother), Anagnos (the kind Headmaster at the Perkins School for the Blind. This actor will double in the role of the Doctor.), Aunt Ev (Helen’s opinionated aunt), Viney (the Keller’s good-humored servant), Percy and Martha (Viney’s son and daughter), Blind Children. Girls auditioning for the role of Helen Keller should prepare a 1-2 minute pantomime showing physicality and a range of emotions. The role of Helen is extremely physical; intense rehearsals with both Annie and Helen will include stage combat, stage falls and developing the poignant visuals necessary to show Helen’s inability to see or hear.

No audition appointment is necessary; actors should try to arrive as close as possible to the start time of the audition.   Those auditioning will read from the script both individually and with scene partners.  No prior experience is needed to audition for NAG productions. The Northfield Arts Guild encourages new people, artists of color, multilingual actors and actors with disabilities to audition.

Rehearsals for The Miracle Worker begin the week of March 5.  Performances are April 21-23 and April 28-30 at the Northfield Arts Guild Theater.  This entrancing story is directed by Rachel Haider whose extensive resume’ includes work with professional, community and educational theaters.
