Northfield Retirement Community Awarded $10,000 Grant from ELCA Foundation

NORTHFIELD, MINN. (December 11, 2013) – The Northfield Retirement Community Foundation announced today that it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from The Lutheran Services for the Elderly Endowment at the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) Foundation. The grant will fund the next phase of Meeting the Need – Launching and Mentoring Unexpected Caregiver Support Groups, a program that addresses the need among family caregivers for accessible and appropriate family support groups.

Assistance for MNsure Enrollment Available At Community Action Center


The Northfield Community Action Center announces there are three trained and certified specialists, called navigators (including a Spanish speaker), ready to assist anyone in the community who wants to apply for health care insurance through the Minnesota version of the affordable care act, MNsure.

Kathy Bjerke, CAC administrative director, is a trained navigator who can work with interested people to explore MNsure’s marketplace for health insurance. Bjerke says the doors are open at the CAC and that she and the other navigators are ready to assist anyone needing help. People who have been seeking direction and information about enrolling in MNsure are welcome to contact the CAC, 1651 Jefferson Parkway.

League of Women Voters Sponsors MNsure Informational Session


MNsure Community Outreach Liaison Jacob Grippen will join CAC Executive Director Jim Blaha and local insurance agent, Dale Ness in a discussion of the current status of the Minnesota version of the Affordable Care Act, MNsure, on Monday, November 25 at 7 p.m. at The Hideaway. The public is welcome to attend.

This event is a follow up to the forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters earlier this fall.  While there has been reporting on the state level about MNsure, this is an opportunity to learn about what programs are in place in the Northfield area to help people enroll in the health care program.  Insurance agents and brokers are trained play a role in assisting individuals, families and small businesses to enroll. Organizations, including non-profits, religious organizations and libraries may also be trained serve their populations to help individuals and families successfully enroll in the MNsure market place.

Hospital's Long Term Care Center earns high marks

Northfield Hospital’s Long Term Care Center is among the most highly ranked nursing homes in the state, according to the latest Nursing Home Report Card released earlier this year by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

Northfield Area Family YMCA Groundbreaking News!

October 16, 2013 – Today, the Northfield Area Family YMCA has announced it will host its official groundbreaking celebration for its new facility, located at 1500 Honey Locust Drive, on Tuesday, November 5. Groundbreaking activities for all ages are set to take place from 4 to 6 p.m., with a formal program slated to begin at 4 p.m. More information about the groundbreaking event can be found on the Y’s website –

Northfield Area Family YMCA Executive Director Virginia Kaczmarek said, “This is a big day for our Y. It will be a great resource for the entire community, open to everyone. Breaking ground on a new facility is a tremendous milestone for the organization, which has been steadily building up to this moment for the past eight years. We owe a great amount of thanks to everyone – donors, members, volunteers, staff members and more – for making this day a reality.”

Health assessment may come your way

Local health officials may seek your help in assessing the health of our community.

Rice County Public Health, District One Hospital, Northfield Hospital & Clinics and HealthFinders are collaborating to assess the health of Rice County. 1,200 randomly selected households will receive a health survey in the mail.  Local health and wellness providers will use the information gathered to improve the health of the community. The confidential survey will ask about physical and mental health, lifestyle habits such as nutrition and exercise, smoking, alcohol use, access to health and dental care, and health care insurance coverage. HCI funds five “Investing in Youth” grants to benefit area youth

At their July and August 2013 board meetings, the Northfield Healthy Community Initiative (HCI) Board approved grants to support five projects and activities designed to benefit Northfield youth.  The projects are all funded through HCI’s Investing in Youth grants program.

Dr. Hans Bengtson joins OFC

Hans Bengtson, MD

Hans Bengtson, MD, an orthopedic surgeon, has joined the practice of Orthopaedic & Fracture Clinic of Northfield, a service of Northfield Hospital & Clinics.

Dr. Bengtson will be working with Robert Shepley, MD; Brad Wille, MD; Clint Muench, MD; and Erik Stroemer, MD. He will see a full range of patients in clinic at Orthopaedic & Fracture Clinic in Northfield and at FamilyHealth Medical Clinics in Lakeville and Farmington. He will operate at Northfield Hospital.  

Dr. Bengtson’s professional association with OFC is a homecoming of sorts. He is a graduate of Northfield High School. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, performed his residency at Marshall University in Huntington, West Va. and recently completed an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. His physician services are provided by Orthopaedic & Fracture Clinic, P.A. of Mankato.

Hospital offers emergency medical training


Northfield Hospital & Clinics Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is offering training this fall to prepare students for emergency medical responder (EMR) or emergency medical technician (EMT) certification.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 17, the class will meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings and alternate Saturday afternoons throughout the fall at EMS base headquarters at 1600 Riverview Drive. The classes are designed to maximize your time and energy to position you for certification.
