John Bierman

John Bierman, age 90 of Northfield, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Monday, December 17th at All Saints Episcopal Church in Northfield with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery with Full Military Rites. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-7:00 pm at the Bierman Funeral Home and at the Church on Monday 1 hour prior to Services.

John Joseph Bierman was born September 13, 1922 in Northfield, son of Arthur and Bessie (Parker) Bierman. He attended Washington Elementary School and Northfield High School graduating in 1940 and was active in football, basketball, track, golf and was an Eagle Scout. He then attended Carleton College for 2 years before entering the Army Air Corp as WWII began. During the war he was stationed at the air base in Labrador as a cryptographer. On May 24, 1944 he was united in marriage to Margaret “Betsy” Elizabeth Shedd who he met at Carleton. Following his discharge in 1946 he returned to Carleton to finish his education and then joined his father and brother in operating the Bierman Furniture Store and Funeral Home. Over the years he was joined by 4 of his children in running the Store and Funeral Home before retiring well into his 80’s.

He was very active in the Northfield Community serving on numerous committees and boards including the Jaycees, various Northfield downtown improvement associations, Northfield Hospital Board for 28 years, many as chairman, Three Links Care Center Board, Southeast Mental Health Board, VFW Last Man’s Club and many others. He was proud of Northfield and was a generous contributor to many groups. He and Betsy were adventurous travelers to all parts of the world which they truly enjoyed and spent many winters in Florida. They were blessed with 12 children and many grandchildren who filled their home during every holiday and special event.

John is survived by his wife Betsy; 12 children, John of St. Louis Park, Peter and wife Diane of White Bear Lake, Mary Patterson and husband David of Northfield, Jim and wife Mary of Northfield, Jane Bierman Lytle and husband Paul of Denver, Joe and wife Kris of Cannon Falls, Susan Bierman and partner Bonnie of Lakeville, Chris of Denver, Robert and wife Ellen of Apple Valley, Charlie and wife Dawn of Rochester, Margaret Cloud and husband Steve of Northfield, Jennifer and husband Jim Griffin of Wilmette, IL; 28 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother William; sister Arvilla; and infant daughter Amy.
