Northfield's "Green Bay Packer Fans" Adopt County Road 23

Green Bay Packer Fans

Tonight is the NFL season opener, and a Vikings fan driving into Northfield on County Road 23 cannot help but notice who has "adopted" the highway.

Green Bay Packer Fans

What?!?

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, "community groups, churches, individuals or businesses" are eligible to adopt a highway, and must agree to pick up litter on both sides for at least two years. There are no rules prohibiting Packer fans from greening our highways.

Who, I wonder, are Northfield's "Green Bay Packer Fans" going to root for tonight?

The Vikings play the 2010 Superbowl champion New Orleans Saints at the Superdome tonight at 7:30 PM CST. The game will be broadcast on NBC.

Go Vikings!

Swim Fast!

Bull Sharks

The Northfield Swim Club Bull Sharks would like to welcome you to our pool! The Fall season is about to begin and we’d enjoy seeing some new faces mixed in with our 70+ current athletes. If you are able to swim from one side of the pool to the other (25 yards) without stopping, you are qualified to join our team!

We will have an informational meeting on September 13 from 6-7 at the pool at the middle school. Come check us out. If you sign up, we’ll have a team shirt and a team swim cap for you.

A clinic for beginner swimmers will be offered starting September 20 at the middle school. It will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for three weeks from 7-8 pm. This will give you a taste of what it is like to be on a swim team. After the clinic, you will see how great our team is and join us for the remainder of the season!

College Fall Sports Preview

572500.jpg

The fall sports season is fast approaching . Both Northfield colleges are gearing up for another year of fierce competition. The fall sports that have commenced thus far are football, and men’s and women’s soccer.

This year at St. Olaf, football is off to an exciting start with forty-three new first-year athletes, in addition to last years returning players. Head Coach Jerry Olszewski is implementing a new team motto: “Either grab an oar or grab a life jacket, help paddle or head for shore”. This year is about teamwork and working as one. The first Ole football game will be September 4th vs. Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Carleton football is also off to a strong start beginning their season with offensive tackle, Brad Eckelmann being named Pre-Season All-American for the second straight year. Head Coach Kurt Ramler will lead the Knights into their first battle on September 4th vs. Crown College in Saint Bonifacius, Minnesota. Their first home game will be on September 18th vs. Luther.

Registration Open For Fall Skating Classes

Register now for fall classes with the Northfield Skating School! We offer skating classes for all abilities and skating goals, including beginners through adults and aspiring hockey players. We are a U.S. Figure Skating model program and encourage participation, enjoyment, and achievement in skating by fostering a positive and challenging learning environment.

This year's programs include group and private lessons, power/edge class, spin class, off-ice strength & stretch, practice ice, holiday events, an ice show, competition opportunities, skating camps, and more.

New Bell Field Tennis Courts at Carleton

This fall Carleton College will be debuting a new tennis facility. The Bell Field Tennis Courts have been completely torn down and rebuilt. Not only are these new tennis courts a great addition to the Carleton College campus, they are a great addition to the Northfield community as well.

The Bell Field Tennis Courts are a unique part of Carleton's athletic facilities. What was once six courts has now been expanded into eight new courts, and the court surfacing and nets have been redone with state-of-the-art equipment. Not only will these courts be used by Carleton varsity athletics, they are also open to the Northfield community at no charge.

As the summer quickly comes to a close, head over to Carleton and try out the new tennis facility. These courts are a perfect spot for some summer fun and recreation.

Y Hiring for Fall Programs - Referrals Requested

NAFYmca-6.jpg

The Northfield Area Family YMCA is hiring for fall positions.  If you (or you know someone) who loves working with children, has experience giving children direction and would love to be a role model - we'd like to hear from you.

Whether you want to work just a few hours a week or more - we've got a wide variety of positions available ranging from our Wiggles & Giggles program (open gym) to basic crafts classes to youth sport programs.

You do not need to be a flag football expert to give direction to Preschool or early school age flag football programs.  If you are interested in learning a bit more, please contact the YMCA at 507-645-0088.  View job descriptions on our website at www.northfieldymca.org.

Referrals make the BEST staff team members - if you know someone, let us know (or let them know)!

The New Target Field

Target Field

After the opening of the new Target Field in April, how do Northfield residents feel about the new addition to the Twin Cities? With all of the new features and activities the Target Stadium offers, Northfield residents are having exciting and unique experiences while cheering for the Twins.

“I think the park is a shrine to Minnesota and we're very fortunate to have such a beautiful stadium,” said Tim Freeland, a Northfield resident who recently had his first experience of the new ballpark.

Northfield Skaters Earn Medals at June Bug Competition

June Bug Skaters.jpg

On Sunday, June 6, Northfield Skating School skaters Emmalyn Fried, Milly Reese, and Elizabeth Penny delivered medal winning performances at the annual June Bug Jump and Spin competition held at the Pleasant Arena in St. Paul. Emmalyn moved up two levels to compete in Freeskate 2 and earned a gold medal for her performance. June Bug was Basic 6 competitor Milly Reese’s first competition, and she also earned gold. Elizabeth Penny advanced a skill level and continued her streak of winning a gold medal at every competition she has entered since she began competing in 2009. Elizabeth won gold in her compulsory program and bronze in her free skate. All skaters practice year-round and are coached by Northfield Skating School Owner/Director, Carey Tinkelenberg. Milly is co-coached by Northfield Skating School instructor Melanie Ritz. View more and larger photos

Swim with Bull Sharks

Northfield Bull Sharks

Hi Northfield,

My name is Jeff Simonson. I am the new head coach for the Northfield Swim Club Bull Sharks. Yes, I am happy to announce the Bull Shark is our newly swimmer-elected mascot. I wanted to post this story and invite you to join us for the summer season. We are starting on Monday, June 14 and running through the end of July into the first few days of August. We are offering practice Monday through Friday on most weeks from 7-9 am at the outdoor pool and a number of weekend swim meets.

Horse Camp at Winterhaven Stables

Horse Camp

The Winterhaven Stables summer horse camp is nearly full for the summer, but I'm still filling a few spaces in the week of July 19th through July 23rd. The horse camp is open for all children of all abilities ages 8 to 18. We stress classical principles of riding in the English disciplines of dressage, jumping, drill teams, and games. The horse camp is a full immersion day camp running Monday to Friday from 9 to 4 each day. Each camper will be responsible for their own horse for the whole week including grooming, tacking, bathing, and basic care. The week will culminate in a fun show on Friday afternoon to exhibit skills learned during the week. The camp is located on a working farm seven miles north of Northfield.  If interested contact Vickie Tyler at winterhavenstables@gmail.com, or at 507-581-4052.
