Go Green, Go Local
by Emma Kmoch (7th grade), ARTech
As a teenager who cares about the enviorment and staying healthy, I try to patronize local businesses as much as possible.
Recently I saw an amazing documentary called “Food Inc.” It is about how several major food companies control most of our food and how dangerous this food can be. Hearing about a two-year old child who was killed by a tainted hamburger just stiffened my resolve. I think everyone needs to watch this movie, it really makes you think about what you are eating. After watching “Food Inc.” I refuse to buy food anywhere but the co-op, and I never eat fast food.
As I said earlier, only a few major food companies control a lot of our food. I think that is wrong and we should stop it.
The first thing to do is to start buying from the co-op and other local food suppliers. If you are unsure of where certain food came from or who provided it, ask! Then, since it is almost Summer, now would be a great time to join on of Northfield’s local CSA farms. You can be supplied with lots of organic vegetable—and, depending on the farm, chickens, eggs, and honey. My family has been going to Big Woods Farm for as long as I can remember. Going to a CSA us a great way to build community. My mom is friends with most of the people who go there and the Farmers David and Laurie and their kids Mari and Theo are really nice and friendly.
To get back to the main point of the article: I think going local is a really great thing. It supports the great local businesses in Northfield, and it helps to draw business away from the evil tyrant food corporations that only care about making money and don’t care about our health.
