Arnhild Wermager

Arnhild Veronica Fjelstad Wermager was born July 23, 1917, in Emmons, Minnesota, to Rev. Rudolph and Gena (Loken) Fjelstad. She was baptized at Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons and as a girl moved with her family to Stoughton, Wisconsin, where she was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church. As a teenager she moved with her family to Thief River Falls, where she graduated from TRF High School in 1935. In 1939, she received her BA in Home Economics with a minor in Biology from Concordia College in Moorhead. Following her education she taught school in Kasson (now Kasson-Mantorville), and Chisago City. Arnhild married Palmer G. Wermager on September 23, 1945, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. After marriage they made their home in Robbinsdale. While Palmer worked as an engineer, Arnhild stayed at home with their daughters. Palmer passed away in 1986. In December 1998, Arnhild moved to the Northfield Retirement Community.

Arnhild was a former member of Our Saviour’s ’s Lutheran Church, Cross of Glory Lutheran Church, University Lutheran Church of Hope, and a longtime former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Over the years she was active in choir, Ladies Aid, Bible Study and Circle. She was currently a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. She was an expert seamstress and enjoyed needle work, sewing, knitting and music. She was extraordinarily fun loving, friendly, had a great sense of humor, and loved her family dearly.

Survivors include 3 daughters and their spouses: Karen and husband Sydney Schultz of Burnsville, Kristi and husband Mark Gleason of Northfield, Susan of Minneapolis; 3 grandchildren: Paul and Karl Gleason, Sonja Wermager; one brother and his wife, Luther and Vivian Fjelstad of Woodbury; her sister-in-law, Margaret Fjelstad of Northfield; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Palmer; her parents; her brother, Ralph; and her sisters Ruth Teisberg and Solveig Fjelstad.

Arnhild passed away Friday evening, September 25, 2009, at the Southview Suites on the Northfield Retirement Center Campus, at the age of 92.

Funeral services will be 11AM Thursday, October 1, 2009, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. John E. Quam officiating. Music will be provided by Daniel Fenn. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield. Casket bearers will be Mark Fjelstad, David Epstein, Richard Engan, David Moen, Paul Gleason and Karl Gleason. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the funeral.

Memorials are preferred to the Northfield Retirement Center or the donor’s choice.
