Sylvia Irene Johnson was born August 21, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Simon and Ida (Moen) Pederson. She was raised in South Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939. She married Merrill Johnson on June 20, 1940, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Merrill was drafted into WWII in 1943 and their daughter Barbara was born that November. Following his discharge in 1945, they made their home in Minneapolis. Sylvia worked for Sears, Roebuck from 1968 to 1974. In 1974, Sylvia and Merrill moved to Texas. They returned in 1989 to be near their daughter. Merrill passed away on December 13, 2004.

Sylvia was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to tease and had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include her 3 grandchildren and their spouses: Kari and Brian Poeppel, Brenda and Mark Keilen, all of Northfield, Robert Jr. and Carrie Olson of Farmington; 9 great-grandchildren: Jeffrey, Michelle, David, Katherine, Amber, Mady, Hunter, Brayden and Brenna; 4 great-great-grandchildren: Riley, Jahmar, Breanna and Destiny; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merrill; her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Robert Olson; her great-granddaughter, Grace Olson; her parents; and 3 brothers: Palmer, Hilberg and Melvin.

Sylvia passed away Monday morning, September 14, 2009, at the Cottages on the Campus of the Three Links Care Center in Northfield at the age of 88.

Funeral services will be 11AM Thursday, September 17, 2009, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. John Quam officiating. Music will be provided by Daniel Fenn. Interment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Casket bearers will be Jeffrey Olson, Michelle Olson, David Hirdler, Katherine Hirdler, Amber Cooper, Mady Keilen, Hunter Olson, Brayden Olson and Brenna Olson. Visitation will be 5-7PM Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield. Visitation will continue at church on Thursday one hour prior to the service.
