Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders celebrate "Defeat of Groundhog Day"
That's the rallying cry of the organizers of Northfield's first annual "Defeat of Groundhog Day" celebration, which takes place Friday, February 1.
No longer content to have the length of our longest season determined by an oversized rat, one local band is taking a stand on the eve of the controversial American holiday known as Groundhog Day.
Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders will put their musical muscle behind an effort to prevent the rotund rodent from making its annual February 2nd prediction as to whether or not another six weeks of winter is in store.
"We've decided that now is the time and here is the place to stand up to the weather-watching woodchuck," said Doug Bratland, bass guitarist for the Bratlanders. "The citizens of Northfield have never been afraid to fight when their lives and livelihoods are at stake, and we knew they'd get behind this effort."
You can show your support for the anti-groundhog cause—and enjoy an evening of rustic American rock & roll in the vein of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Leadbelly and their ilk—at the Contented Cow. The music begins around 8:30 p.m.

Armed poodles could help
The Rotary is going to engage in a Poodle Shoot, which has brought out the "Arm the Poodles!" groups in Dundas. Perhaps after the armed poodles defeat the urban blighters, they could be conscripted to defend Northfield against the rotund rodents (who are known to be on the payroll of the major local news channels, since they don't have time for issues and need fluffy rodents to draw in jaded viewers).
A singing saw could help as well
Thanks, Bruce. I'm all for enlisting the help of gun-toting poodles, but who's going to dispatch the dogs? According to Wikipedia, poodles are particularly sensitive to the sounds of a musical saw, and will drop their weapons and leave the scene immediately upon hearing one. Luckily, a saw player (along with an accordionist and a gang of other musicians), will be arriving at the Cow at 11:00!
A singing saw ?
Fact check: thats "Wikipoodlia", hardly an unbiased source for poodle trivia.
Bias worth both ways...
I suppose you're one of those "Encyclopoodlia Britannica"-types. You authoritarians make me sick - the internet can create poodle-based knowledge bases as well as, if not better than a bunch of stuffed shirtzus.
Commemorative DGHD t-shirts!
A very limited number of commemorative "Defeat of Groundhog Days" t-shirts will be available at tonight's show. Get down to the Cow early for your chance to own a piece of future Northfield history.
