Remembering architect, Scout leader Don Starr

Don StarrUpdate: Alec Irwin has let us know that visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Bierman's Funeral Home and the funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Church. Scouts should wear their Class A uniforms.

We have received word that Don Starr, a local architect and Scout leader, died Friday. We are waiting for more details on funeral arrangements. Alec Irwin, a friend of Don's, has shared some photos of him doing the Scout work that he loved. You can see them by clicking on the photo in this post.

Alec wrote:
"Some of the pictures taken at camp show Don pointing in one direction or another. This was our joke that every picture we would get of each other we would be pointing so we could use them for the Troop344.us website navigation."

"In the pictures DonTommahawkBoys and DonTommahawkCamp you will notice he has a toolbelt or fanny pack. We were having a belt contest where we would compete to see who could carry the most silly things with us in/on our belt and then make up a reason why we would need it and make use of it -thus we would be the better prepared Scout leader. Don is showing me some of the stuff he has in his belt in the DonTommahawkCamp picture. He is showing me some kind of mask and some cheap binoculars and asking me why I don't have them in my belt."

"I am going to miss Don tremendously."

Don Starr

I am greatly saddened by the news of Don’s passing.  He has touched the lives of so many in ways that can never be expressed in words alone.  His love and dedication to the Boy Scouts and the kids he worked with will never be forgotten.

I met Don about six years ago when I joined the Northfield community and he made me feel welcome.  Although I never spent a lot of time with him, every time that I did see him it was if we were old friends.

Don’s family and friends are in my prayers.

To the family of Don Starr:

This note came from Renee Mosca Lillis:

I wish that I could say something other than I'm sorry for your loss, but I can't. Just take with you everyday knowing that Donny was truly a good person (not many at all like him) and a very respected person in the community. I have to say he really had a great sense of humor. I have not seen Donny for many years since I moved to Idaho in 1994, so I was greatly saddened to hear this.

Again sincerely my condolences,

Renee Mosca'Lillis
