Ruth Hansen Palestine Travel Scholarship Applications Sought
Submitted by Jane B McWilliams on Wed, 01/16/2013 - 7:21pm
Anyone who has dreamed of visiting Palestine/Israel but found it unaffordable may be excited about a new travel opportunity. Northfielders for Justice in Palestine/Israel is accepting applications from area residents for its Ruth Hansen Palestine Travel Scholarship. Applications are being accepted now through Feb. 15, 2013. The scholarship is named for the long-time Northfield resident and her decades of activism for peace and justice in the Middle East.
The scholarship will pay program expenses and ground transportation for the selected applicant(s), who will participate in an alternative tourism program by the Siraj Center for Holy Land Studies (sirajcenter.org). Siraj offers a variety of programs (http://tinyurl.com/njptravel) throughout the year.
Siraj provides travel programs off the tourist trail for a rich and authentic experience of the Holy Land. The Center, which is located in the Beit Sahour neighborhood of Bethlehem, Palestine, aims to bring visitors and locals together for intercultural experiences while providing income-generating opportunities for Palestinian communities.
Unlike the typical Holy Land tour, Siraj allows participants to live with a Palestinian family in the West Bank. S/he can study Arabic at nearby Bethlehem University, volunteer in a school or refugee camp and linger over a cup of “shai” or “kah-way” at local shops and restaurants.
But most important, participants witness first-hand the human rights violations experienced by Palestinians perpetrated by the oppressive Israeli regime.
The successful candidate(s) will be a resident of Northfield or the immediate area and will commit to discuss and debrief with NJP following the trip. NJP members gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the community for donations to make the opportunity possible.
Northfielders for Justice in Palestine/Israel is an ecumenical group of community members who organize local events to educate and advocate for justice and peace in Palestine/Israel.
