Girl Scouts Celebrate 100th Anniversary at Northfield Historical Society

Come to the Northfield Historical Society Thursday, June 28 from 5-9 p.m. for a centennial celebration of the Girl Scouts of the USA.  The event kicks off the Society’s exhibit “Northfield Girl Scouts -Then and Now,” which will run through mid-August.

Host of the event is the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys in Northfield. Starting at 5 p.m., local Girl Scouts dressed in vintage uniforms will be on Bridge Square with songs, activities and demonstrations. Spectators can try their hand at tying a square knot or learning how to use signal flags.  Beginning at 7, the Community Band will feature favorite Girl Scout songs.

The exhibit features personal stories and memorabilia of Northfield women who have participated in scouts throughout the years. The Northfield Girl Scouts has a collection dating back to 1919 of personal stories and memorabilia. These include camping at Bridge Square in the 1960 and earning top awards for providing important services to the community.

This is part of the national centennial celebration. Led by founder Juliette Gordon Low, the first meeting took place in Savannah Georgia in 1912, Since that time, over 50 million girls have participated in the Girl Scouts. With its mission to develop girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place, it is the longest-running leadership program for girls in the nation and the world.
