Gary Dahl commentary: Launching a new life

After 20 years of humanitarian work, I thought I'd seen almost everything. I'd been through armed conflicts, close calls and extremely complex humanitarian emergencies. But I'd never seen anything like this. I wasn't prepared for it. Nobody was. I did quickly learn one thing, however: The best thing to do in a situation like this is to ask people what they need -- and listen.

Coach's home exudes joy-filled chaos

Secondary to building Carleton College's women's basketball program, Tammy Metcalf-Filzen has built, along with her husband, a warm and loving family of seven children from points far and near.

For non-Christians, Christmas is a time for countertraditions

At the multicultural household of Scott Parker, a nominal Methodist who converted to Buddhism eight years ago, Christmas is simply "too big to ignore." Parker is married to a Vietnamese woman whose religious background, like many in her home country, is both Buddhist and Catholic. The couple adopted two daughters from Vietnam whom they are raising in the Buddhist tradition. "For us, Christmas is not celebrated as a Christian holiday but a family holiday," said Parker, who lives in Northfield, Minn.

Jarrett Iovinella rolled into Escape Ultra Lounge on a bike. For the moment, the designer stylist at Northfield's Luis Enrique Salon was transported back to his childhood in New Jersey at last week's young adults toy drive sponsored by Richard Moody. A Nutrisoda brand ambassador, Moody hits up all his business contacts for the toy drive. It has outgrown its original location, his home.

Music, wrapped in a bow

If your heart soars at the strains of Handel's "Messiah" or Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" this year, say a silent thank-you to the Siberian stallion, the Brazilian pernambuco tree and the artisan whose gifts made it possible for those strings to sing. Matthew Wehling is one such artisan. In the no-frills basement of his 1903 house in Northfield, Wehling crafts award-winning bows for violins, cellos and violas. Musicians pay as much as $5,000 for a Wehling bow.

ARC aims to replace 500 boats lost in tsunami

In a telephone interview Thursday, Gary Dahl, a Northfield, Minn., native who oversees the group's activities from Bangkok, said the organization has taken steps to ensure that only fishermen who lost boats get replacements.

State moves to keep up fee

Republican Sen. Tom Neuville of Northfield said the tobacco fee hits hardest at low-income people. Neuville said he would be willing to consider a 25-cent increase in the cigarette tax but would oppose turning the 75-cent health impact fee into a tax. "I can't see us passing another $400 million tax increase on 20 percent of the citizens of Minnesota," Neuville said.

Space Case: John Berkey Paints the Universe

Yet it's his uniquely impressionistic vision of the future that put Berkey's reputation over the moon, years before he started creating poster and book jacket images for the likes of George Lucas (the aforementioned epic) and Dino DeLaurentis (Jaws, King Kong). Sure, "John Berkey Observed," currently showing at ArtOrg's Moving Walls gallery in Northfield, offers a smattering of Terra-based work--including a couple of intriguing nudes--but, in the 50 paintings and 100 paperback covers on display, space is mainly the place.
