Moonlight Serenade
Intricate rhythm patterns dance through the frosty air tonight as Northfielders celebrate community in Way Park under a nearly full moon.

Joseph Mbele, St. Olaf professor of English, storyteller and author, entertains families huddled under their blankets around the campfires. Judy Swanson, with Friends of Way Park, says that Mbele was excited to participate in the event because she says, "it builds community."
Carleton College's African drum ensemble also performs from the natural stage formed by the embrace of the park's limestone wall. "The spot is so great for it," says Jane McWilliams, with Friends of Way Park.
Doug Bratland, NCO board member and park neighbor, and his family came to enjoy the evening's festivities. "I wanted to live someplace that does this in its parks," he says, "and then I realized: I do."
Deeming the event a success, Swanson who helped organize the event to build community, looks with pride at the 150 to 200 faces flickering in the fire-light. "I feel like a mother hen," she says, "I just love it."
(Update: Doug Bratland has added a photo gallery with a half dozen more pictures from the event.)
