Twelve years after being exiled to a deserted island, the sorcerer and former Duke of Milan, Prospero, invokes an outrageous storm in order to beach his wrongdoers for a final confrontation. His storm washed up royalty, drunkards and clowns in order to amend old wrongs and to offer his daugher Miranda a cast of characters worthy of her exclamation, "Oh brave new world, that has such people in it!" Weighing virtue against vengeance, Prospero readies for retirement as he relinquishes power over his savage slave Caliban and his spiritual muse, Ariel. The Tempest, Shakespeare's last great play may be one of his most autobiographical, as playwright and character alike put the final touches on their long careers of creativity and power. St Olaf's production will feature the exciting innovations of several student designers as they create the scenic and aural landscapes for The Tempest's beguiling island environment.
