Polka-Schottische- Waltz: Old Time Brass Band Music; Sat. January 7

The Finnish American Brass Band AMERIIKAN POIJAT (Boys of America) will perform and concert and old time dance at Faribault’s Paradise Center of the Arts on Saturday evening January 7, 7:00. This event will include narrations by Minnesota folklorist John Berquist and a visual presentations of Minnesota immigrant life. Following a one hour concert program, “Poijat” will roll up the carpets and play traditional social dances, with dancing right on the Paradise stage. This special presentation will be of interest to music lovers, dancers, and history buffs. Young folks are also very welcome. If you have band music in your family history, bring your stories and photos to share after the concert.

This program will include traditional brass band music from the Nordic national romantic era, some more recently written compositions, and music from the Finnish dance halls. The ensemble’s “saxhorn” instruments are a revival of the brass band style known in Scandinavia and among Minnesota immigrants 100 years ago.
