Carleton College is pleased to present acclaimed novelist Peter Geye, author of the buzz worthy novel Safe from the Sea (Unbridled books, 2010), on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. Since its release, Safe from the Sea, Geye’s debut novel, has generated rave reviews—deemed “finely crafted” by Booklist and selected as the October pick-of-the-month by Indie Bound, Publishers Weekly, the Women’s National Book Association, and Midwest Connections. Geye will read selections from the novel and then sign copies of the book, which will be available for purchase at a 15% discount at the event. This opportunity to meet author Peter Geye is free and open to the public.

Safe from the Sea recounts the story of a father and son’s reconciliation, family grudges, and the business and adventure of the Great Lakes shipping industry, set against the backdrop of northern Minnesota. The New York Journal of Books says “Geye is a skilled and subtle observer. Throughout the book, readers are given an affectionate and perceptive view of roughhewn northern Minnesota, not only its Walden-esque lakes and forests, but also its thrifty and honest people…Geye is a gifted storyteller….” ForeWord Magazineobserves “Geye excels at capturing the importance of life’s seemingly small moments, and at cataloguing their beauty.” For more information on Geye and further reviews of Safe from the Sea, visit www.petergeye.com.

A Minneapolis native, Geye received his B.A. from the University of Minnesota, his M.F.A. from the University of New Orleans, and his Ph.D. from Western Michigan University, where he taught creative writing and was editor of Third Coast. Geye currently resides in Minneapolis with his wife and three children.
