Haiti Relief Efforts Continue at Carleton College
As part of its ongoing efforts, Haiti Relief Carleton is pleased to present Dr. Joia Mukherjee, Medical Director of Partners in Health, on Thursday, April 8 at 5 p.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel at Carleton College. The next day, students and members of the Northfield community are invited to help pack bags of supplies to send to Haiti. The packing event will happen in the Great Hall on Friday, April 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. yes"> These events are free and open to the public, and donations are appreciated.
Since the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, Haiti Relief Carleton has raised over $4,000 in donations. Dr. Mukherjee’s visit is designed to continue raising awareness and donations in Northfield toward Haiti relief efforts. Mukherjee began working with Partners In Health in 1999 and became Partners In Health's Medical Director the next year. She is also Director of the Institute of Health and Social Justice, the advocacy arm of Partners In Health. PIH is an international medical charity with clinical programs in Haiti, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Peru, Mexico, Russia, and inner city Boston. Mukherjee studied Infectious Disease, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics at the Massachusetts General Hospital and has an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. She has been involved in international health care access and human rights issues since 1989.
Following Dr. Mukherjee’s visit, Haiti Relief Carleton hopes the community will not only participate in the packing event, but also respond with the donation of money and supplies. The event will focus on creating gift bags for new mothers (one of the items requested by Midwives for Haiti), which are gallon-size Ziploc bags with 3 cloth diapers, 2 one-sies and some diaper pins. These packages are incredibly useful, and easy to put together. All gift bags will be stored and then brought to Haiti in June by Natalee Johnson, certified midwife and coordinate of medical services at the College’s Wellness Center.
Haiti Relief Carleton is a student-run group that coordinates campus and community-wide Haiti relief efforts. The organizing members are Max Bearak ’12 (South Africa), Hunter Knight ’11 (Brookline, Mass.), Kate Adkins ’11 (Earlham, Iowa), Jon Fraser ’10 (Greenville, Pa.), and Rebecca Palmer ’10 (Falls Village, Conn.).
