Oct 13 2010 7:00 pm
Location:
Boliou Hall Auditorium, Carleton College

In conjunction with the Carleton College Art Gallery’s current exhibit “Prints Around the Pacific Rim,” printmaker and professor Charles Cohan of the University of Hawaii—one of the exhibit’s featured artists—will speak on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Boliou Hall Auditorium. Entitled “Exchanges: Printmaking Around the Pacific Rim,” Cohan’s lecture will reflect on printmaking around the Pacific Rim through the lens of his own experiences, as an artist and lifelong resident of the region. This event is free and open to the public.

An enthusiastic artistic collaborator and seasoned traveler, Cohan was raised in Oregon and now lives in Hawaii, perfectly positioning him to discuss the diverse interactions within the printmaking community of the Pacific Basin. In addition to his own work, Cohan will speak about the work of artists from New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and other artistic centers highlighted in the Carleton Art Gallery exhibit. Along with a slide lecture, Cohan will share a stunning portfolio of fifty prints initiated by the Highland Printmaking Association in Mittagong, Australia.

Professor of art and director of the printmaking program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Cohan is an accomplished printmaker and actively involved in artistic exchange as an artist and teacher. He has also taught in Italy, New Zealand, and South Africa. His work is the recipient of significant artistic awards and is featured in many major museum collections. For more information on Cohan and his work, visit www.charlescohan.com.

Featuring the work of artists from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, and Hawaii—“Prints Around the Pacific Rim” celebrates the varied method of printmakers, and highlights artistic exchange between cultures across the wide Pacific. The exhibit is on display in the Carleton College Art Gallery now through November 17, 2010. For more information, including Gallery hours, visit  www.carleton.edu/campus/gallery.

Cohan’s appearance is sponsored by the Christopher U. Light Lecture in the Arts fund. Boliou Hall is accessible via Highway 19 in Northfield. For more information, including disability accommodations, contact Art Gallery Curator Laurel Bradley at (507) 222-4342.
