Cutting-edge Jazz Trio The Bad Plus Returns to Carleton College

Location:
Carleton College Concert Hall

Acclaimed Minneapolis-based Avant garde jazz trio The Bad Plus will return to the Carleton College Concert Hall for a not-to-be-missed lecture and performance on Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, beginning at 7 p.m. The appearance is part of the band’s current tour in support of their soon-to-be-released studio album, “Never Stop.” Admission to the lecture and concert is free but, because an overflow crowd is expected, this will be a ticketed event.

Called “audacious and rule-breaking,” The Bad Plus is, in the words of the New York Times “better than anyone at mixing the sensibilities of post-60s jazz and indie rock.” Featuring pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson, and percussionist David King, the trio has broken down the walls of jazz convention and shown that the jazz tradition of innovation is still very much alive. Their nine CDs constitute a body of work representing collective music making at its most compelling.

Released in the United States on Sept. 14, “Never Stop” is the first album by The Bad Plus to consist entirely of original compositions. Recorded in Minnesota with a live, stripped-down sound, “Never Stop” showcases the band’s range as well as its three distinct personalities. From gentle and melodic to fierce and abstract, from swing to 80s techno, “Never Stop” is tied together by a group sound that embraces diversity as strength.
