Carleton Music Faculty to Present Recital
Carleton College music faculty member Laura Caviani, along with special guests Joan Griffith (guitar and mandolin) and Dave Schmalenberger (percussion), will perform in recital on Sunday, February 19 at 3 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The trio will perform selections from their 2008 release “SambaNova,” which includes original compositions using examples of samba, bossa nova, baiao, and choro, along with arrangements of some of Brazil’s most lauded composers, including Jobim, Mariano, and Delmira. This concert is free and open to the public.
Laura Caviani has performed and recorded for over 15 years. She has four highly acclaimed albums: Dreamlife, As One, Angels We Haven't Heard, and In Your Own Sweet Way. In addition to Carleton, Caviani has taught at St. John's University, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and the University of St. Thomas. Caviani received the B.M. in Composition from Lawrence University and the M.M. in Improvisation from the University of Michigan.
Joan Griffith heads the jazz studies department at the University of St. Thomas and also directs the MacJazz Workshop at Macalester College. Dave Schmalenberger co-chairs the percussion department at McNally Smith College in St. Paul, and specializes in traditional African music.
