Carleton’s Symphony Band Presents “March Madness!”
Carleton’s Symphony Band, under the direction of Ron Rodman, will perform its winter concert, "March Madness!" on Friday, February 19 at 8 p.m. in the Carleton Concert Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
The march is a musical genre with a strong regular rhythm, originally written for and performed by military bands. The Carleton Symphony Band’s performance will trace the development of the march for wind instrument bands, with pieces by Beethoven, Berlioz, Chabrier, Holst, W.C. Handy, Karl King, and Phillip Rhodes, professor emeritus of music. These song choices also demonstrate how widely marches can vary in tempo and overall mood.
Ronald Rodman is professor of music and director of the Carleton Symphony Band. He earned his PhD in music theory from Indiana University in 1992. His research interests include analysis of music in the electronic media, post-tonal theory in the 20th century, Schenkerian analysis, musical signification, music theory pedagogy, and wind band music history. His book “Tuning In: American Narrative Television Music” was published by Oxford University Press in 2009.
The Carleton College Concert Hall is located at First Street and Winona Street in Northfield. For more information or disability accommodations, contact the music department at (507) 222-4475.
