This workshop is an introduction to an intuitive and adaptable printmaking process in which a variety of materials are bound to a mat board.  The surface is inked and wiped using various methods and then run through the press to create a print.  This pliable process creates an endless variety of texture and image.  It can be used in combination with other media, printmaking processes, and collage. This class will teach a variety of techniques suited to a range of imagery.  The resulting prints can vary from highly textural non-representational prints to detailed, natural images.  Beginning and experience printers are welcome.  Bring image ideas to class.

ETO logoThe Friends of Way Park, together with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and PBS stations across the country, announce the second annual Explore the Outdoors gathering on Saturday, May 10 in Northfield’s Way Park.

The Explore the Outdoors event was inspired by a PBS and NRPA initiative to get kids outdoors. PBS has a month of children's programming related to "earth themes," and this year they've created a new website called Plum Landing, which they launched right before Earth Day. In cooperation with NRPA, they have put together some resources for parents and activity sheets.

Once again, FWP is partnering with several local organizations to present a full afternoon of outdoor fun. The event will take place in Way Park from 1:00–4:00 pm on Saturday, May 10, and will include:

Start: May 10 2014 7:00 pm

The Saturday concert will be performed at First United Church of Christ, 300 Union St., Northfield, at 7:00 PM and the Sunday concert at 7:00 PM in Cannon Falls at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church, 7459 Hwy 19 Boulevard. Acclaimed musician Yair Dalal, violinist and oud player, will present an evening of traditional and contemporary Arab and Iraqi Jewish music on Saturday, May 10 at 8 p.m. in the Carleton College Great Hall. This performance of unique world music is free and open to the public.

Much of Dalal’s repertoire reflects his extensive musical skills in both classical European, Jazz and Arabic music—also reflecting the strong affinity he has for the desert and its habitants. Dalal’s family came to Israel from Baghdad and his Iraqi roots are embedded in his musical work. Whether working on his own, or with his acclaimed Alol ensemble, Dalal creates new Middle Eastern music by interweaving the traditions of Iraqi and Jewish Arabic music with a range of influences originating from such diverse cultural milieus as the Balkans to India. The evocative compositions comprise a unique and colorful sound.

As a cancer survivor with a doctorate in biology, Steingraber offers both a personal and scientific look at what she regards as a human rights issue, and offers insights into how we can protect our environment and ourselves.

Carleton College will host “Northfield Reads: Veterans’ Voices,” a reading and discussion of the important stories written and shared by military veterans, on Sunday, May 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Larson Meeting Room (236). This event is free and open to the public.

In Minnesota alone, 1 in 13 adults are veterans—and each has compelling stories to tell. Earlier this year, six Minnesota veterans shared their candid accounts of military service from the Vietnam era to the present day, providing an unvarnished look at the heroism, absurdity, horror, wonder, and banality of military life. This time, several organizations are teaming up to invite members of our community to gather for a rich discussion of veterans’ experiences as they are revealed through a few short readings that are written by veterans about their experiences.

Carleton College’s African Drum Ensemble, a student collective that uses indigenous instruments and teaching methods to perform rhythms and songs from West Africa, will show off its talents in a concert on Tuesday, June 3 at 4 p.m.. The concert will take place on the College Bald Spot (or, in the event of rain, in the Sayles-Hill Great Space), and is free and open to the public.

The Carleton African Drum Ensemble, conducted by percussionist Jay Johnson, accepts students by audition. Students have the opportunity to participate in the ensemble as a one-credit course. In addition to the African Drum Ensemble, Carleton has offered ensembles for two instruments of the Shona people of Southern Africa, the karimba and the mbira dza vadzimu, which are both plucked instruments also known as the “thumb piano.”
