Resilient Book Club

We meet monthly at the Northfield Public Library to read and discuss books focused on sustainability, permaculture and gardening, possible futures for a society that refuses to wean itself from an addiction to cheap energy. Our thinking goes like this: we have created a culture wholly dependent upon non-renewable energy sources that, by definition, will end at some point. So let’s educate ourselves and build support for those ideas that can usher in a new way of doing our lives.

The Tempest, Shakespeare's last great play may be one of his most autobiographical, as playwright and character alike put the final touches on their long careers of creativity and power. St Olaf's production will feature the exciting innovations of several student designers as they create the scenic and aural landscapes for The Tempest's beguiling island environment.

Twelve years after being exiled to a deserted island, the sorcerer and former Duke of Milan, Prospero, invokes an outrageous storm in order to beach his wrongdoers for a final confrontation. His storm washed up royalty, drunkards and clowns in order to amend old wrongs and to offer his daugher Miranda a cast of characters worthy of her exclamation, "Oh brave new world, that has such people in it!" Weighing virtue against vengeance, Prospero readies for retirement as he relinquishes power over his savage slave Caliban and his spiritual muse, Ariel.

Start: Apr 12 2013 7:30 pm

On Saturday evening, April 13 at 7:00 p.m. in partnership with students from St. Olaf SustainAbilities and Transition Northfield, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is screening the award-winning film “Bidder 70.”

The film centers on an act of civil disobedience in 2008 by University of Utah student Tim DeChristopher in the name of climate justice. He disrupted a land auction, preventing pristine land adjacent to Canyonlands National Park in Utah from being leased for oil and gas extraction. Registering as Bidder #70, he obtained 14 parcels for $1.8 million. He was removed from the auction by federal agents and taken into custody and questioned. He was indicted on two federal felonies, and in 2011, sentenced to two years in federal prison. He will be released in April.

Start: Apr 13 2013 7:00 pm

What does it take to halt drilling for oil and gas on pristine PUBLICLY owned land? Tim De Christopher. This courageous young man was protesting the auction of leases on public lands, then entered the auction and won the bids for 22 tracts. With no intention of paying (and no intention of drilling!), Tim was sentenced to two years in a federal prison.

Bidder 70 is his story; it is also the story of the movement called Peaceful Uprising that grew to support him and bring to national attention our extremely vulnerable relationship to the future if we continue to burn oil and gas with no regard for the consequences.
