2013 Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary Feature, How to Survive a Plague is the story of two coalitions—ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group)—whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these self-made activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry and helped identify promising new drugs, moving them from experimental trials to patients in record time. With unfettered access to a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and '90s, filmmaker David France puts the viewer smack in the middle of the controversial actions, the heated meetings, the heartbreaking failures, and the exultant breakthroughs of heroes in the making.

Siri Hustvedt, an acclaimed author whose work has been read worldwide and translated into over thirty languages, will deliver Carleton College’s convocation address on Friday, Feb. 22 at 10:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. Hustvedt’s talk, entitled “Reflections on Creativity: Memory, Imagination, Narrative and the Self,” will draw upon her study of psychoanalysis, philosophy and neuroscience in looking at how personal experience and memory become transformed into narrative. The Carleton College Department of Political Science presents the 2013 Wynia Memorial Lecture by Luigi Manzetti, Professor of Political Science, Southern Methodist University. This event is free and open to the public.
Carleton College will present a special screening of the one-hour documentary film, “Souls of Zen: Buddhism, Ancestors, and the 2011 Tsunami in Japan,” on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Boliou Hall auditorium. Following the screening, filmmaker Tim Graf will lead a Q & A session. Nearly two years after the disaster, Graf is showing the film at colleges around the country in order to spark a dialogue with religion scholars and students. The public is invited to this free screening, with a goal of raising awareness of Japan’s ongoing recovery process, along with supporting area fund-raising activities for disaster victims.
A lecture by Linda Olson Keller '74, FAAN Clinical Professor, University of Minnesota. This session will present a national and international overview of health inequities and address the tension that exists between social justice and the market justice perspective that dominates American society. This event is part of the 2013 Social Science Conference, "Health and Inequality: Social Determinants of Health."
Pianist Nicola Melville will join the Carleton College Symphony Band in a special performance honoring the works of renowned American composers on Friday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. in the Carleton College Concert Hall. Entitled “An American Miscellany,” the program is free and open to the public.
“An American Miscellany” will feature the talents of pianist Melville, an associate professor of music at Carleton and an accomplished live performer who has premiered the work of many composers in the United States and her native New Zealand. Melville and the Symphony Band will present such works as George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” one of the most popular pieces of American concert music. Other works to be featured in the concert include Charles Ives’s “Variations on America”, William Schuman’s “Chester: Variations for Piano” and Aaron Copland’s “El Salón México.”

Carleton College will present its annual student-produced and performed production of Even Ensler’s “Vagina Monologues” on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. The public is invited and there is a suggested donation of $5 to $15 at the door. All proceeds will benefit The Hope Center in Faribault and the V-Day Spotlight Campaign (www.vday.org), a global movement to end violence against women and girls.
First performed in 1994, playwright and activist Eve Ensler’s play “The Vagina Monologues” “offered the world a piece of art like nothing it had seen before,” says student coordinator Lauren Chow ’14 (Weston, Mass.). The ground breaking production was based on dozens of interviews Ensler conducted with women, addressing women's sexuality and the social stigma surrounding rape and abuse. The result was a new conversation about and with women.
Acclaimed as one of the Diaspora’s leading Bharatanatyam ensembles, Ragamala Dance seamlessly carries this South Indian classical dance form into the 21st century. Artistic Directors Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy see Bharatanatyam as a multi-dimensional art form—a dynamic, poetic language that conveys their ideas. Carleton College’s renowned Chinese Music Ensemble will perform on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 4:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
The ensemble, formed in 2004, consists of Carleton students playing traditional Chinese instruments. It has performed at numerous venues throughtout southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities. Naomi Seidman, a scholar who specializes in Jewish culture and literature, will deliver Carleton College’s annual Forkosh Family Lecture in Judaic Studies and Religion on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Severance Great Hall. Entitled “The Marriage Plot: Sexuality, Secularization and the Emergence of Modern Jewish Literature,” Seidman’s lecture will explore how the secularizing trends of the 18th and 19th centuries worked through art and literature to influence Jewish sexual norms. Carleton College will host an exclusive performance of composer Sarah Kirkland Snider’s beautiful and haunting song cycle, “Penelope,” featuring renowned classical/indie rock vocalist Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and NYC’s most in-demand new music ensemble, yMusic. This rare public performance takes place Thursday, Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel on the Carleton College campus. Worden will also perform selected music from My Brightest Diamond and Sarah Kirkland Snider will also be in attendance. Following the performance will be a Q & A session with an opportunity for audience members to meet the musicians.

The Northfield Historical Society presents “Hops, Grapes & History,” a benefit event on Saturday, March 2 at the Grand Event Center in Northfield.
The evening includes a beer and wine tasting from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring a hand-selected variety of Minnesota craft beers and wines; hors d’oeuvres; and a silent auction with a chance to bid on numerous goods and services from local businesses. Then from 9 to 11:30 p.m., the event concludes with a not-to-be-missed performance of “Guaranteed Cash,” a tribute to the songs and sounds of Johnny Cash, performed by legendary guitarist Bob Wootten (lead guitarist for Johnny Cash’s band for over thirty years) and country rockers, Six Mile Grove.
The Carleton College Choir, under the direction of Lawrence Burnett, will present selections from George Frederick Handel’s Messiah on Saturday, March 2. The program begins at 7 p.m. with “Messiah Insights,” a pre-performance introduction on the libretto, Handel’s score, and Baroque instruments, followed by “Messiah Highlights” at 8 p.m., performed by the Choir and accompanied by a professional orchestra comprised of period Baroque instruments. This event will be held in the Carleton College Concert Hall and is free and open to the public.
“Messiah Insights” will feature Richard Crouter, the John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies, Emeritus, who will provide a brief presentation on Charles Jennings’ libretto; followed by Stephen Kelly, the Dye Family Professor of Music, Emeritus, who will speak about Handel’s score and Baroque performance practices, with demonstrations by members of the orchestra.

The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra will present concerts on the theme "Darkness and Light" on March 9 at 3 p.m. at John’s Lutheran Church Hall, 500 3rd Street West in Northfield and March 10 at 4 p.m. at the Paradise Center for the Arts, 321 Central Avenue North in Faribault.
The Orchestra will render strong emotional musical statements about some of the basic moods of life, including remorse, joy, adventure, glory, and happiness. These will come to the listener through the genius of Hungarian composer Franz Liszt, German Max Bruch, and Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, whose music incorporates darkness and light in sound.
The two March 2013 concerts will feature cellist Anna Clift. Ms. Clift will be soloist in Max Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, a musical prayer based on the Hebrew service. The cello imitates the cadences of the synagogue cantor.

The Carleton College Orchestra will present their winter concert on Friday, March 8 at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Directed by visiting professor of music Timothy Semanik, this performance is free and open to the public.
Highlights of the program will include Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Coriolan Overture,” Samuel Barber’s first “Essay for Orchestra”, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet” and Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations.” The Carleton Orchestra performs a varied repertoire from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Semanik, currently the conductor of the Salt Creek Chamber Orchestra in Illinois, has appeared with a variety of orchestras and operas nationwide and formerly served as the music director for the University of Chicago Chamber Orchestra and the Northern Illinois University Philharmonic.

Jean Wakely, will talk about the Jewell Wolk Story Quilt Project, which is dedicated to the memory of her mother, Betty Jewell Wolk, on Saturday, March 10:00 a.m., in the Northfield Public Library meeting room
Over the course of twenty-five years, Jewell completed nine quilts and began a final, tenth quilt. Each quilt tells a unique story about some aspect of women's lives and work.
Jewell was an extraordinary artist and creative storyteller. Founder of the famous Montana Storytelling Project, she knew how to tell a story. The project seeks to show how each quilt came into being and the stories that are associated with each scene or vignette pictured on the quilt.

Lin Bruce will talk about her adventures on the bicycle. Approaching one of those decade-birthdays Lin was wondering how she might celebrate, and was looking for adventure, when she noticed an ad in a magazine for a cross country bicycle ride that started on her birthday. Since seeing that ad, Lin has ridden her bicycle on long cross-country trips four times.
Lin considers herself an ordinary person, who has had extraordinary times on these bike trips. Come hear a bit about Lin’s experiences, and how she makes each journey one pedal stroke at a time.

12th Annual St. Patrick Day Walking Parade has become a rite of spring for all Northfield residents, Irish or not! Gatheter Saturday at Basil's Pizza Parking lot around 1:30 for a 2:00 start. Everybody loves a parade, especially the kids. Also, bring your pets - they always look good in green! Look at pictures from last year's parade. It was a little warmer, but I'm sure this year will be just as fun.

The final concert in the Senior Center Winter Concert Series will be Sunday, March 17, at 3pm, with music by the Lars Skjervheim Spelemannslag. The “Lag,” composed of St. Olaf students, was founded by Andrea Een, and led by her until her retirement from St. Olaf last June. Marybeth Stull, adjunct professor of music at St. Olaf, has taken over the direction of the Lag. Stull meets with each of the hardanger fiddle students weekly, and with the group twice per month. Musicians at the Sunday concert will include three students, Stull and her husband (on guitar). Admission for the concert is $5.

Jim May, Professor of Classics at St. Olaf College, will present a travelogue on Greece on Monday, March 18 at 7 PM at the Northfield Public Library.
Jim is an author and scholar and has traveled to Greece over 30 times (including a stint as a rower on a replica of an ancient Greek warship around the Aegean Sea) and has led over 20 study travel programs there.

An exhibit revealing a children's electronic talking storybook titled, "It Happened One Night on the Milky Way Trail," written and illustrated by Northfield artist Tom Frank, will be held at the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault, February 26 through April 16. A family-friendly artist’s reception with kids’ activities and live acoustics with the video book's musicians is planned for March 1, from 5-7 p.m. Visitors to the exhibit will be able to view the creative process -- from hand drawing characters, to developing a storyboard, to writing copy and adding colorized scenes to the finished production.
Kids get their own special night away from parents and parents get a night without kids. This evening of fun activities includes all sorts of themed games, crafts and a whole lot more! Dinner is included in the price of the program and will be served at 5:30pm.

Members: $10 per child for first two children, $5 for each additional child

Countering Conflict with Your Heart: Creating peace in Relationshipsis program being offered for Northfield area residents by John Owens, Certified Life Coach. The program will be eight sessions held every other Thursday from 7 to 9 PM (venue in Northfield TBD) beginning January 17 from 7 to 9 PM, and running alternate weeks through April 25. Cost is a voluntary donation; the benefits are priceless.
