New projects every week. Pay one fee and come as often as you like in each 5 week period. Cost is per child and covers the cost of supplies, equipment and staff and planning.

An exhibition of oil landscape paintings by Joannie Johnson. These works were inspired by Johnson’s recent kayaking trip to the area. This gallery is located near the lab waiting area at Allina Medical Clinic of Northfield at 1440 Jefferson Road. Regular Clinic Hours are 7 am to 8 pm Monday through Thursday, 7 am to 7 pm Fridays, and 9 am to 3 pm Saturdays.

Join the Cannon River Watershed Partnership for a free Blue Thumb class to learn about rain gardens. Rain gardens are not only attractive but also benefit the Cannon River. The class will cover:

Rain garden basics
Design and installation for your property
Maintenance
Bring a rough sketch of your property layout and downspouts for more site specific advice

Northfield residents may qualify for a $250 grant to install their own rain garden.

Carleton Players and Semaphore Dancers Present Ancient Greek Tragic Trilogy, Oresteia

Carleton College’s premier dance and theater groups, the Players and the Semaphore Repertory Dance Company, come together in a new adaptation of Oresteia, Aeschylus’ trilogy of Ancient Greek tragedies, premiering Friday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Theater. Additional performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. nightly on May 12 and 18, along with 2 p.m. matinees on May 13 and 20. First performed in 458 BCE, Aeschylus's Oresteia is among the earliest surviving complete plays in the history of theater. Carleton College closes the inaugural season of the new Weitz Center for Creativity Theater with a production of Northfield poet Rob Hardy's new adaptation of Aeschylus's trilogy. The play features music by composer Mary Ellen Childs and dance by the Semaphore Dance Company.

Carleton College vocalists will have an opportunity to shine in a concert Friday, May 18 at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The concert, entitled “Let’s Dance!,” will showcase an eclectic range of music about dance, featuring the Carleton Choir (both the Men’s Chorus and Bella Cantemus) and the Carleton Singers. Lawrence Burnett, a professor of music and choral director at Carleton, will conduct. This event is free and open to the public.

“Let’s Dance!” will present a variety of music from many genres. Among the works set to be performed are “Tanzen und Springen” by early Baroque composer Hans Hassler, the “Neue Liebeslieder” waltzes by 19th-century composer Johannes Brahms, and “Creep,” the debut single from the British rock band Radiohead.

Make Your Own Rain Barrel

First hear a presentation on the effects of runoff on water quality, the benefits of rain barrels, and how to install and maintain your rain barrel. History Camp at the Rice County Historical Society
