The symposium will feature a variety of lectures, panels discussions, and demonstrations by scholars from Carleton and around the world. The symposium opens on Monday, May 14 at 4:30 p.m. with a lecture entitled “Sepharad: Jewish History in Spain,” presented by Carleton professor Stacy Beckwith. All events related to this symposium are free and open to the public.
Called “one of the extraordinary undertakings of our time” by Smithsonian Magazine, The Saint John’s Bible is the first handwritten, illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey in over 500 years. This monumental work in seven volumes was officially commissioned in 1998 and the final “Amen” of Revelations was penned in May of 2011 by calligrapher and artistic director, Donald Jackson, at his scriptorium in Wales. Replete with original art, including illuminations in gold, silver and platinum throughout, The Saint John’s Bible has been praised by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, saying “This is a work of art, a great work of art ... a work for eternity.” Ecumenical in its conception, the images draw from all major faith traditions, and include contemporary imagery, such as a view of earth from space, as well as more traditional images. For more information, visit www.saintjohnsbible.org.
Tim Ternes, Executive Director of The Saint John’s Bible Project at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, will present “From Inspiration to Illumination: An Introduction to The Saint John’s Bible” on Monday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carleton College Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema. This is a wonderful and rare opportunity to learn more about the conception, processes, tools, methods and materials used to make The Saint John’s Bible. Following the presentation, guests will have the opportunity to handle vellum and writing quills and to see full-size, beautifully-bound fine art reproductions of some of the pages of The Saint John’s Bible. This event is free and open to the public.

Visiting professor and esteemed philosopher Kendall Walton will present “Thoughtwriting – in Poetry and Music” on Tuesday, May 15 at 12 p.m. in Leighton Hall Room 305 on the Carleton College campus. This presentation is free and open to the public.
It is said that nearly all works of literary fiction have narrators – characters who, within the fictional world, think or write the words of the text and thereby report the story to the reader. Walton, however, suggests an alternative way to understand literary works, an understanding applicable not only to poetry, but also to music. Walton argues that this alternative understanding, which he will elaborate upon in his presentation, explains several important aspects of listeners’ experiences, as well as bringing out an unnoticed respect in which poetry has more in common with music than with other forms of literature.

First performed in 458 BCE, Aeschylus's Oresteia is among the earliest surviving complete plays in the history of theater. Carleton College closes the inaugural season of the new Weitz Center for Creativity Theater with a production of Northfield poet Rob Hardy's new adaptation of Aeschylus's trilogy. The play features music by composer Mary Ellen Childs and dance by the Semaphore Dance Company.

Carleton College’s premier dance and theater groups, the Players and the Semaphore Repertory Dance Company, come together in a new adaptation of Oresteia, Aeschylus’ trilogy of Ancient Greek tragedies, premiering Friday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Theater. Additional performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. nightly on May 12 and 18, along with 2 p.m. matinees on May 13 and 20. Admission is free and open to the public; reservations are strongly encouraged by visiting online at www.carleton.tixato.com/buy.
In 2010 the Save the Northfield Depot(STND) organized to coordinate and promote the effort to preserve Northfield’s 1888 rail depot. The Northfield City Council advanced those preservation efforts significantly on March 20, 2012, when it approved an historic agreement to sell a parcel of City-owned land to Save the Northfield Depotfor $1. The agreement paves the way for moving the depot from its current location on railroad property to a new location on the “Q-Block,” where a restored depot will serve as an anchor for redevelopment.
“The depot now needs the public’s help to ensure its survival,” noted Lynn Vincent, co-chair of Save the Northfield Depot.
The acclaimed Carleton College Chinese Music Ensemble will perform in concert Sunday, May 20 at 3 p.m. in the Concert Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
Founded in 2004 and comprised of Carleton students playing traditional Chinese instruments—including bowed strings, plucked strings, winds and percussive instruments—the Chinese Music Ensemble performs throughout the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

RE: NORTHFIELD JOB CLUB MEETING – May 23, 2012
The Northfield Public Library will host the bi-weekly meeting of the Northfield Job Club in the library meeting room on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 from 1:30 – 2:30 PM
Presented by Minnesota Workforce Center, Faribault Office, the topic of this workshop will be “Interviewing and personality type”. For those looking for work, job search skills are the foundationof an effective job search and this meeting will be valuable for all job seekers.
On Wednesday, May 23 at 7 p.m., Carleton College will host a public panel discussion on the ethics of healthcare access in America. Entitled “Healthcare as a Human Right: Access & Barriers,” this event will take place in the College’s Weitz Center for Creativity, Room 236, and is free and open to the public.
Americans may agree on a citizen’s rights to life and liberty, but does the nation have a moral duty to ensure healthcare? As Carleton’s EThiC initiative asks in this term’s “Questions” blog (go.carleton.edu/thequestion), “Is access to healthcare a universal human right?” This panel discussion will provide some helpful context for that debate by looking at moral and practical barriers that have emerged in assuring fair use of America’s healthcare system.

Reverend Ruth Caigoy Janoras, an activist working through the church to protect communities in her native Philippines from environmental destruction and human rights abuses, will speak at Carleton College on Monday, May 28 at 7 p.m. in the Gould Library Athenaeum. Her presentation, entitled “Environmental Justice in the Philippines: A Faith-based Perspective,” will be followed by a reception. This event is free and open to the public.
Caigoy Janoras’ island of Mindanao, Philippines, is currently facing an environmental crisis. Multinational mining corporations are ripping profits from the land and leaving environmental destruction in their wake; ecologically valuable bio-diverse regions are being converted into single-crop plantations paying wages far below living wages; over half of the growing population lives in poverty; and government corruption is endemic.

Carleton College will award the Bachelor of Arts degree to 486 graduating seniors at the 138th annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 9, at 9:30 a.m. on the Bald Spot, the lawn west of Hulings Hall on the Carleton campus. A celebratory picnic on the Bald Spot will follow. In the event of severe weather, commencement will be held indoors at the Recreation Center. Seating is available to accommodate all guests, whether outdoors or indoors, and no tickets are required.
Commencement is always a special time of celebration at Carleton. In addition to remarks by College President Steven Poskanzer, this year’s ceremony will include brief speeches by two graduating seniors—selected to speak by a panel of their peers—along with an address from this year’s recipient of an honorary degree.
Have you always wanted to learn a simple method that can help you relieve stress, give you more self confidence, and help you concentrate on your schoolwork?
Then please join in on June 9 for a day of meditation, recreational activities, and lunch at St. Olaf College!
This is the third year this course has been offered here in Northfield. Some of the children have remarked: "I never knew I could feel so calm" and "It was a really cool experience".
This is a nonsectarian class. Children from all backgrounds are welcome. Please register early at http://www.mn.us.dhamma.org/en/youth.shtml
