YMCA Art Explorers (ages 3-K)

We supply the clay, paints, paper and glue.  You supply the children and have them bring their curiosity. Create a masterpiece for the frig – or simply enjoy stretching your child’s creativeness.  Parents, join us for family time fun.

YMCA Run-Wiggle -Paint & Giggle (ages 3-K)

Free time for kids after lunch.  Play gym games or paint or color or create a small art project.  We set up the gym with all sorts of activities and options – kids chose!  Fun free time.  New projects every week. Pay one fee and come as often as you like in each 5 week period.  Cost is per child and covers the cost of supplies, equipment and staff and planning.

YMCA Boxing (8-12 grade)

Learn the ABC’s of the sweet science of boxing.  Boxing does much more than simply build muscle and heart health.  Learn self discipline, concentration, quick thinking and enjoy the physical fitness of a growing sport for youth by former professional boxers Gordon Marino and Charlie Meyer.  Equipment provided   One-on-one coaching available.

An exhibition of oil landscape paintings by Joannie Johnson.  These works were inspired by Johnson’s recent kayaking trip to the area.  This gallery is located near the lab waiting area at Allina Medical Clinic of Northfield at 1440 Jefferson Road.  Regular Clinic Hours are 7 am to 8 pm Monday through Thursday, 7 am to 7 pm Fridays, and 9 am to 3 pm Saturdays.

Carleton and St. Olaf post-graduate studio artists present digital compositions from mixed media scans, graphite drawings, mixed media works on wood, digital photos, ceramic sculptures, and intaglio prints.
 Artists include Becky Carlson, Ann Erickson, Zoe Klosterboer, Jane Meyer, Meagan Nishi, and Kathryn Weaver.

Opening Reception:  Friday, May 4, 7-9pm
 

YMCA Frisbee Golf  (grades 2-5th)

Frisbee or Disc Golf is a game in which players throw a flying disc into a basket or at a target.  The object of the game is to complete the course with the fewest number of throws.  No experience necessary.  We’ll provide the instruction and equipment and enjoy spring!

Rice County Public Health is pleased to announce a series of FREE skills sessions and e-newsletters to help your organization strengthen its employee wellness program. The events will be held periodically through June 2013.


Attend the kick-off meeting on Tuesday, May 15 from 8:15 to 10:30 a.m. in the Teleconference Room at South Central College, 1225 3rd Street SW, Faribault. You will learn about topics for each skills session, build a stronger business case for workplace wellness and gain insights on best practices.

Peter Ubel, Carleton Class of 1980, a noted physician and behavioral scientist whose work has focused on the idiosyncrasies of human nature that impact our lives, will deliver Carleton College’s convocation address on Friday, May 11. Ubel’s presentation, “Battling Over Health Care: The Weird Clash of Morality and Psychology That Threatens to Bankrupt Us,” will explore the framing of the health care debate in the United States, including such topics as informed consent, shared decision-making and health care rationing. Convocation is held from 10:50-11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel, and it is free and open to the public.

This very popular event brings hundreds of women to downtown Northfield for an evening of shopping and pampering, dining and socializing, dancing and fun. Carleton College’s premier dance and theater groups, the Players and the Semaphore Repertory Dance Company, come together in a new adaptation of Oresteia, Aeschylus’ trilogy of Ancient Greek tragedies, premiering Friday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Theater. Additional performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. nightly on May 12 and 18, along with 2 p.m. matinees on May 13 and 20. First performed in 458 BCE, Aeschylus's Oresteia is among the earliest surviving complete plays in the history of theater. Carleton College closes the inaugural season of the new Weitz Center for Creativity Theater with a production of Northfield poet Rob Hardy's new adaptation of Aeschylus's trilogy. The play features music by composer Mary Ellen Childs and dance by the Semaphore Dance Company.

Carleton College’s Symphony Band, directed by Ronald Rodman, will present its spring performance on Friday, May 11 at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall.  The concert, featuring works by Gustav Holst, Richard Rogers, Frank Ticeli, Danny Elfman, Arvo Part, and Antonin Dvorak—is free and open to the public.

 

Ronald Rodman, Dye Family Professor of Music and Director of the Carleton Symphony Band, earned his Ph.D. in Music Theory from Indiana University. He has studied subjects including the use of music in electronic media, post-tonal theory in the 20th century, and wind band music history. In addition to directing the Symphony Band, Rodman is also a consultant to the AP Music Theory program, and has published numerous articles in professional music journals. His most recent publication is Tuning In: American Narrative Television Music (Oxford University Press, 2009)
