Exercise the sillies out of your kids with Open Gym fun – basketballs, scooters and much more.  Supervised program for elementary school age kids.  Free time and great exercise! Parents – join your children for some afternoon fun.

YMCA Art Explorers (ages 3-K)

We supply the clay, paints, paper and glue.  You supply the children and have them bring their curiosity. Create a masterpiece for the frig – or simply enjoy stretching your child’s creativeness.  Parents, join us for family time fun.

YMCA Run-Wiggle -Paint & Giggle (ages 3-K)

Free time for kids after lunch.  Play gym games or paint or color or create a small art project.  We set up the gym with all sorts of activities and options – kids chose!  Fun free time.  New projects every week. Pay one fee and come as often as you like in each 5 week period.  Cost is per child and covers the cost of supplies, equipment and staff and planning.

YMCA Boxing (8-12 grade)

Learn the ABC’s of the sweet science of boxing.  Boxing does much more than simply build muscle and heart health.  Learn self discipline, concentration, quick thinking and enjoy the physical fitness of a growing sport for youth by former professional boxers Gordon Marino and Charlie Meyer.  Equipment provided   One-on-one coaching available.

The Carleton College Perlman Teaching Museum will formally open its new spring term exhibit, “Our Treasures: Highlights from the Minnesota Museum of American Art,” on Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m. with a three-hour reception and community open house that includes a presentation by the exhibit curator along with family-friendly arts activities. “Our Treasures,” on display in the Braucher Gallery of the Perlman Teaching Museum, is comprised of a rich collection of paintings, sculpture, drawings, photography and craft objects, showcases American art in a variety of styles and runs from March 30 until May 8, 2012. Located in the College’s Weitz Center for Creativity, admission to the Perlman Teaching Museum is free and all related events are open to the public.

 

Carleton College will present “Photographing the Social Body: Malian Portraiture from the Studio to the Street” in the Kaemmer Family Gallery of the Perlman Teaching Museum, located in the Weitz Center for Creativity. The exhibit, which showcases the vibrant photographic culture of the West African country of Mali, opens Friday, March 30, with a guided tour, a lecture, and an opening reception. The opening events, along with gallery admission, are free and open to the public.

              The Guild welcomes work by Northfield’s young artists in the 2012 All School Art Show.  Artwork will be featured by students attending ARTech, Bridgewater Elementary, Greenvale Park Elementary, home school, Northfield Area Learning Center, Northfield High School, Northfield Middle School, Prairie Creek Community School, Sibley Elementary, and St. Dominic School.  The reception for this exhibition coincides with the Guild’s Imagination Celebration, a day filled with free art activities and performances by and for young people, Saturday, April 21 from 11am – 3pm.

YMCA Girl’s Volleyball (3rd -5th grade)

Serve, Set, Bump, Spike!  This once-a-week, clinic for girls in grades 3rd - 5th will provide kids with the skills necessary to play well, exercise their bodies and have fun.  Join us for fun and fitness at the YMCA.

An exhibition of oil landscape paintings by Joannie Johnson.  These works were inspired by Johnson’s recent kayaking trip to the area.  This gallery is located near the lab waiting area at Allina Medical Clinic of Northfield at 1440 Jefferson Road.  Regular Clinic Hours are 7 am to 8 pm Monday through Thursday, 7 am to 7 pm Fridays, and 9 am to 3 pm Saturdays.

Northfield's Perennial Earth Day Celebration will be on the afternoon of April 28th outside the United Church of Christ. Meet fellow community members for educational workshops, fun activities, local foods and music. All ages. Come inside if it rains.

Come learn about the basic techniques of scanning photographs and then sharing them with your family and friends. The workshop is sponsored by the Northfield History Collaborative and will be held at the Northfield Public Library on Sat. April 28, 1-3 PM. Bring your photos and we’ll scan as many as time allows. The event is free but registration is required and will be limited to 30 people. Call the library reference desk at 645-1802 by Wed. April 25.

 

Carleton College will host its first-ever Reproductive Justice Conference on Saturday, April 28, in the Weitz Center for Creativity. Entitled

"Sex, Lies and Things Our Mothers Never Told Us: How Reproductive Justice Fits into Every Aspect of Our Society,” the all-day conference is designed for students, activists, and youth – everyone is welcome.

 

The event will feature 13 workshops and presentations by reproductive justice activists from around the United States. Topics will include “Decolonizing Sexuality,” “Religion and Reproductive Justice,” “Minnesota Abortion Access,” and much more. A keynote address will be presented by Loretta Ross, National Coordinator for the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, at 10:15 a.m. in the Weitz Center Larson Meeting Room 236.  For more information on Loretta Ross and SisterSong, visit www.sistersong.net.

This faithful adaptation of Charles Dickens' second novel is an exciting, fast-moving melodrama about the adventures of an orphan redeemed from a life of cruel poverty and crime by an act of unselfish courage. Not the musical version of the novel, this is a dark tale filled with strong characters and a very physical staging, not appropriate for young audiences. Directed by Bob Gregory-Bjorklund.

Carleton College’s Black Students Alliance will host Step It Up II, a celebration of black expression through various forms of dance, on Sat., April 28 in the Weitz Center for Creativity. This event is free and open to the public.

 

Step It Up is one of Carleton’s most popular and widely attended annual events. In addition to performances by Carleton students and dance ensembles, Step It Up also showcases a wide variety of African-American dance forms presented by visiting groups from the Twin Cities and beyond.

 

This year, the event will feature a series of Hip-Hop Dance Master Classes, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and again from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Weitz Center for Creativity Dance Room 165. Space is limited for these classes; reservations can be made at www.carleton.edu/activities.
